Abstract
There
can
be
a
temptation
to
dismiss
moral
pushback
against
novel
science
and
technology,
particularly
commonplace
labels
for
nanotechnology
synthetic
biology
like
“playing
God”
or
“messing
with
nature".
One
of
the
reasons
this
is
an
implicit
association
between
tragic
themes
lack
constructive
benefit.
Therefore,
paper
uses
concepts
from
art
cinema
offer
new
perspective
on
public
"fears":
ecstatic
reframing.
By
treating
negative
narratives
not
as
roadblocks
progress,
but
portals
into
latent
dreams,
method
reframes
such
views
housing
positive
vision.
However,
while
offers
approach
regarding
talk
emerging
lay
ethics
ultimately
insufficient
deal
underlying
problems
that
stimulate
their
tone.

Abstract
Engineering
biology
(EngBio)
is
a
dynamic
field
that
uses
gene
editing,
synthesis,
assembly,
and
engineering
to
design
new
or
modified
biological
systems.
EngBio
applications
could
make
significant
contribution
achieving
net
zero
greenhouse
gas
emissions.
Yet,
policy
support
will
be
needed
if
fulfil
its
climate
mitigation
potential.
What
form
should
such
policies
take,
what
they
target?
This
paper
reviews
EngBio’s
potential
contributions
assist
policymakers
shape
regulations
target
resources
and,
in
so
doing,
facilitate
democratic
deliberation
on
desirable
futures.

Advanced
bioengineering
is
often
described
as
a
transformative
field
with
the
potential
to
reshape
aspects
of
society
and
environments.
However,
it
remains
largely
unfamiliar
publics,
compounded
by
its
highly
abstract
complex
technical
details.
Increasingly,
there
have
been
calls
for
public
engagement
that
grounds
in
concrete,
real-world
uses.
Furthermore,
move
beyond
limits
archetypal
or
intrinsic
concerns
encouraging
people
flesh
out
justify
their
support
lack
thereof.
This
national
focus
group
study
investigated
views
across
Australia
regarding
four
novel
applications.
By
presenting
these
technologies
contextualised
scenarios
incorporating
characters
range
perspectives,
answers
call
greater
frame
awareness.
We
conclude
publics
are
more
than
capable
weighing
negotiating
between
multiple
frames
at
once,
providing
own
order
whether
accept
reject
one
technologies.
