Free-living flatworms, also known as turbellarians, are abundant and key components of aquatic habitats. They play vital roles in food webs contribute to ecosystem health. However, our understanding their diversity remains limited, even from comparably well-studied regions Europe. In this work, we summarise the available records on turbellarians Hamburg, Germany, provide new based material obtained during exploratory collecting, place selected species a molecular phylogenetic context. We sampled four localities two urban suburban, three other Germany Switzerland, collecting submerged vegetation, litter, mosses. Prior investigation, Hamburg had documented 26 turbellarians. Our collections have led first recorded instances Stenostomum gotlandense Castrella alba along with for Hamburg: Macrostomum rostratum , Microdalyellia schmidtii Krumbachia hiemalis Polycelis tenuis . Additionally, updated information five previously S. leucops Prorhynchus stagnalis armigera Gyratrix hermaphroditus Planaria torva The analysis revealed cryptic within grande comprising distinct clades (Brazil Japan + Germany), consisting (Sweden Finland, Brazil). One Finnish clades, aquariorum is both morphologically molecularly distinct, recognise it valid species, now Future research needed further clarify relationships remaining these particularly type United States. Among rhabdocoel microturbellarians, identified truncata (with European North American lineages) (encompassing Spanish lineages). provided evidence supporting monophyly following sequencing K. Conversely, Bothromesostoma were found be nested clade containing Mesostoma leading us propose synonymising genera. Overall, study underscores rich biodiversity potential suburban ecosystems detecting freshwater turbellarian while highlighting need across distributions. Moreover, analyses uncovered several catenulids rhabdocoels, emphasizing importance future efforts describe species.

Microturbellarian flatworms comprise a diverse assemblage amongst meiofauna. These animals primarily exhibit carnivorous feeding habits, preying on various organisms, such as crustaceans, annelids and even other microturbellarians. However, details of their diet are poorly known. This study represents the first documentation proseriate upon rhabdocoel. The was extracted from sediment studied alive. Within its digestive tract, structures reproductive systems prey were observed identified belonging to Phonorhynchopsis haegheni , predatory turbellarian well. No remains any organisms detected. finding underscores relevance Proseriata top-level predators within meiofaunal trophic web, role that warrants further consideration beyond what has been previously acknowledged.

Marine microturbellarians are an assemblage of meiofaunal flatworms abundant in sediments and on seaweeds around the world. The diversity distribution these animals Japan poorly understood. Here, we provide overview all recorded species characterize two new rhabdocoel genus Reinhardorhynchus based morphological features a molecular phylogeny inferred from 18S 28S rDNA sequences. ryukyuensis sp. nov. can be distinguished other by lack armed cirrus presence larger opposing hooks five smaller interconnected its male copulatory organ. sagamianus differs congeners because organ combines bipartite with belt overlapping scale-like spines, unarmed accessory cirrus, large distal hooks. Our phylogenetic analyses show that R. form clade for which DNA sequence data available. Within this clade, is also includes riegeri anamariae . discovery highlights importance uncovering documenting hidden biodiversity along Japan’s coastal margin.

Freshwater slugs are scarce and belong exclusively to panpulmonate Acochlidimorpha. There is a radiation of eight species large-sized living benthically in rivers on tropical Indo-Pacific Islands. In the Western Atlantic, only one small interstitial slug, Tantulum elegans Rankin, 1979, known from Caribbean island St. Vincent. We recently discovered novel freshwater Cuba. Here, we describe Potamohedyle espinosai n. gen. sp., which first slug region Atlantic with benthic lifestyle, 3D-microanatomical histological detail using light scanning electron microscopy. It shows mix characters different acochlidimorph genera, such as medium body size, presence an osphradial ganglion, distal gonoduct muscular sphincter, penis solid thorn cuticular comb, basal finger hollow stylet. Morphological adaptations life include multiplicated renopericardioducts. The taxonomic character justifies establishment genus within herein diagnostically modified family Tantulidae. A molecular phylogenetic hypothesis riverine including representatives suggests that transition occurred once along stemline limnic Acochlidiidae, secondarily marine Pseudunelidae

Schizorhynchia is a group of free-living interstitial flatworms within Kalyptorhynchia, characterized by possessing split proboscis. To date, only seven species have been recorded from Japan. Here, we describe two new schizorhynchs, Proschizorhynchella quadricaudata sp. nov. and Cheliplana izuensis , based on specimens collected the intertidal zone Japanese waters. We also explored phylogenetic position taxa partial sequences nuclear 18S rRNA 28S genes. ( i ) proboscis lips with row glands; ii simple cone-shaped stylet; iii caudal end four finger-shaped projections. can be distinguished its congeners strong hooks bifurcate tips, encircling distal part spiny cirrus; fact that proximal 20% cirrus length unarmed; proboscis’ sidepieces lacking needles; iv paired seminal vesicles; v presence vagina. The analyses support P. Schizorhynchidae C. in clade containing all Cheliplanidae.
