Adipose tissue is the main energy store in sea turtles and fluctuates response to dietary conditions external stressors. Monitoring programmes commonly use body condition indices (BCIs) infer nutritional health status of turtle populations. However, BCIs have poor predictive power for estimating adipose tissue. We introduce bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as a portable technique estimate green Chelonia mydas . The aims this study were on Great Barrier Reef (Australia), examine whether more sensitive indicator than BCI. Turtles (n = 250) sampled at 3 foraging sites nesting beach with differing levels anthropogenic impact. Differences tissue, Fulton’s BCI, mass across life stages assessed by conducting linear mixed effects models. BIA estimates mean revealed significant differences sampling sites, that not found using BCI data. Mean was estimated be 4.6 ± 0.6% (% SD) correlated (1.2 0.1). reduced high level Adult had significantly higher values juveniles subadults. females measured during shortly before season highest (%). practical method we recommend consideration monitoring programmes.
