Rigorous analysis of diversity-dependence—the hypothesis that the rate proliferation new species is inversely related to standing diversity—requires consideration ecology organisms in question. Differences between infaunal marine bivalves (living entirely within sediment) and epifaunal forms partially or completely above sediment–water interface) predict these major ecological groups should have different diversity dynamics: may compete more intensely for space be susceptible predation physical disturbance. By comparing detrended with rates diversification, origination, extinction this exceptional fossil record, we find experienced significant, negative diversity-dependence origination net whereas show little appreciable relationship evolutionary rates. This macroevolutionary contrast robust time span over which dynamics are analysed, whether mass-extinction rebounds included analysis, treatment stratigraphic ranges not maximally resolved, details detrending. We also persists hundreds millions years, even though itself rises nearly exponentially, belying notion must imply equilibrial dynamics.

Abstract Mass extinctions are natural experiments on the short- and long-term consequences of pushing biotas past breaking points, often with lasting effects structure function biodiversity. General properties mass extinctions—exceptionally severe, taxonomically broad, global losses taxa—are starting to come into focus through comparisons among dimensions biodiversity, including morphological, functional, phylogenetic diversity. Notably, functional diversity tends persist despite severe taxonomic diversity, whereas taxic morphological may or not be coupled. One biggest challenges in synthesizing extracting general these events has been that they driven by multiple, interacting pressures, taxa their traits vary events, making it difficult link single stressors specific traits. Ongoing improvements stratigraphic resolution for multiple clades will sharpen tests selectivity help isolate hitchhiking effects, whereby organismal carried differential survival extinction owing other higher-level attributes, such as geographic-range size. Direct comparative analyses across also clarify impacts particular drivers taxa, traits, morphologies. It is just filter deserves attention, longer-term impact derives part from ensuing rebounds. Abstract Stratigraphic paleobiology uses a modern understanding of the construction stratigraphic record—from beds to depositional sequences sedimentary basins—to interpret patterns and guide sampling strategies in fossil record. Over past 25 years, its principles have been established primarily through forward numerical modeling, originally shallow-marine systems more recently nonmarine systems. Predictions these models tested outcrop-scale basin-scale field studies, which also revealed new insights. At multi-basin global scales, joint development biotic records has come largely from macrostratigraphy, analysis gap-bound packages rock. Here, we present recent advances six major areas paleobiology, including critical tests Po Plain Italy, mass extinctions recoveries, contrasts systems, interrelationships habitats architecture, large-scale assembly regional ecosystems. We highlight potential for future research that applies paleobiological concepts studies climate change, geochemistry, phylogenetics, structure conclude with need thinking paleobiology.
