ABSTRACT Aim The impact of Pleistocene climate fluctuations on the biogeographical history aquatic species has been a topic enduring debate. This issue poses particular challenges for parapatric closely related species, especially those situated in transition zones where assemblages occur between distinct zoogeographic boundaries. Location Eastern China. Taxon Five Sinopotamon and subspecies, S. shensiense , honanense y. yangtsekiense shanxianense tongbaiense . Methods These distributed along boundary Palaearctic Oriental realms eastern China, offer an ideal model addressing these challenges. We explored biogeographic by conducting comparative phylogeographic analysis using nine microsatellite loci two mitochondrial DNA sequences, combined with morphological variation fine‐tuned ecological niche modelling. Results Our analyses consistently revealed well‐supported clades: clade A, B, which includes other showing polyphyletic patterning significant gene introgression. Nanyang Basin surrounding mountains regions (NBSM) was identified as critical shared refuge hybrid zone, facilitating interspecific introgression through at least putative hybridisation events. During Late glacial cycles, introgressive occurred NBSM, followed rapid expansion colonisation heterogenous habitats during interglacial dispersal corridors largely aligning local river system. In particular, diffusion corridor significantly disrupted continuous distribution indicating that replaced NYSM caused disruption its distribution. Main Conclusions histories B are consistent mixing–isolation–mixing model, suggests populations experienced repeated periods regional habitat isolation periods. findings represent classic case fine tracking scenarios provide unprecedented insights into evolutionary radiation freshwater fauna occupies

Abstract Telomere lengths and telomere dynamics can correlate with lifespan, behaviour individual quality. Such relationships have spurred interest in understanding variation their within between populations. Many studies identified how environmental processes influence dynamics, but the role of genetic is much less well characterized. To provide a novel perspective on telomeric relates to variability, we longitudinally sampled individuals across narrow hybrid zone ( n = 127 samples), wherein two Manacus species characterized by contrasting genome‐wide heterozygosity interbreed. We measured 66) population 3) differences and, among hybrids, amount admixture using RADseq‐generated SNPs. tested for dynamics. then examined covaried Hybrid exhibited longer telomeres, average, than adjacent parental No were observed. Within relatively low heterozygosity, higher was associated shorter telomeres rates shortening—a pattern that apparent other All these independent sex, despite life histories male female manakins. Our study highlights comparisons reveal interrelationships naturally occurring hybridization relate

In a hybrid zone between two tropical lekking birds, yellow male plumage of one species has introgressed asymmetrically replacing white another via sexual selection. Here, we present detailed analysis the trait to uncover its physical and genetic bases trace evolutionary history. We determine that carotenoid lutein underlies phenotype describe microstructural feather features likely enhance color appearance. These same reduce predicted water shedding capacity feathers, potential liability in tropics. Through genome-scale DNA sequencing hybrids each genus, identify BCO2 as major gene responsible for polymorphism. The tree genome-wide allele frequency patterns suggest carotenoid-pigmented collars initially arose third reached through historical flow. Complex interplay selection hybridization thus shaped phenotypes these species, where conspicuous traits are key reproductive success.
