ABSTRACT The ecological impacts of nighttime light pollution have been a longstanding source concern, accentuated by realized and projected growth in electrical lighting. As human communities lighting technologies develop, artificial increasingly modifies natural regimes encroaching on dark refuges space, time, across wavelengths. A wide variety implications identified. However, the primary research to date is largely focused disruptive influence higher vertebrates, while comprehensive reviews compiled along taxonomic lines within specific domains, subject need synthesis common mechanistic framework. Here we propose such framework that focuses cross‐factoring ways which alters (spatially, temporally, spectrally), influences biological systems, particularly distinction between as resource an information source. We review evidence for each combinations this cross‐factoring. patterns time wavelengths, use flows may be disrupted, with downstream effects structure function ecosystems. Background Shift work, including night has been hypothesized to increase the risk of chronic diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Recent reviews evidence relating these hypotheses have focussed on specific diseases or potential mechanisms, but no general summary current data shift work published. Methods Systematic critical recent original studies indexed in PubMed prior 31 December 2009 were retrieved, aided by manual searches reference lists. The main conclusions from principle results are presented text tables. Results Published is suggestive not conclusive for an adverse association between breast cancer limited inconsistent cancers at other sites all combined. Findings relation risks CVD, diabetes also relationship. Conclusions Heterogeneity study exposures outcomes emphasis positive non-significant make it difficult draw conclusions. Further needed additional endpoints populations.

Millions of individuals habitually expose themselves to room light in the hours before bedtime, yet effects this behavior on melatonin signaling are not well recognized. We tested hypothesis that exposure late evening suppresses onset synthesis and shortens duration production. In a retrospective analysis, we compared daily profiles living (<200 lux) vs. dim (<3 lux). Healthy volunteers (n = 116, 18–30 yr) were recruited from general population participate one two studies. Participants lived General Clinical Research Center for at least five consecutive days. Individuals exposed or 8 h preceding bedtime. Melatonin duration, offset, suppression, phase angle entrainment determined. Compared with light, bedtime suppressed melatonin, resulting later 99.0% shortening by about 90 min. Also, during usual sleep greater than 50% most (85%) trials. These findings indicate exerts profound suppressive effect levels body's internal representation night duration. Hence, chronically exposing oneself electrical lighting disrupts could therefore potentially impact sleep, thermoregulation, blood pressure, glucose homeostasis.

Most organisms display endogenously produced ∼24-hour fluctuations in physiology and behavior, termed circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are driven by a transcriptional-translational feedback loop that is hierarchically expressed throughout the brain body, with suprachiasmatic nucleus of hypothalamus serving as master oscillator at top hierarchy. Appropriate regulation important for many homeostatic functions including energy regulation. Multiple genes involved nutrient metabolism rhythmic oscillations, metabolically related hormones such glucagon, insulin, ghrelin, leptin, corticosterone released fashion. Mice harboring mutations clock alter feeding endocrine signaling, dietary fat absorption. Moreover, misalignment between behavioral molecular clocks can result obesity both rodents humans. Importantly, most potently synchronized to external environment light information exposure night potentially disrupts system function. Since advent electric lights around turn 20th century, artificial irregular schedules has become commonplace. The increase parallels global prevalence metabolic disorders. In this review, we propose alters function through disruption system. We first provide an introduction system, specific emphasis on effects Next address interactions metabolism. Finally, review current experimental epidemiological work directly associating

Based on the idea that electric light at night might account for a portion of high and rising risk breast cancer worldwide, it was predicted long ago women working non-day shift would be higher compared with day-working women. This hypothesis has been extended more recently to prostate cancer. On basis limited human evidence sufficient in experimental animals, 2007 International Agency Research Cancer (IARC) classified 'shift work involves circadian disruption' as probable carcinogen, group 2A. It has frequently been reported that exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) may cause negative health effects, such as breast cancer, circadian phase disruption and sleep disorders. Here, we reviewed the literature assessing effects of human ALAN in order list various aspects ALAN. Several electronic databases were searched for articles, published through August 2014, related on health; these also included details experiments exposure. A total 85 articles review. observational studies showed outdoor levels are a risk factor cancer indoor intensity individual lighting habits relevant this risk. Exposure bright during nighttime suppresses melatonin secretion, increases onset latency (SOL) alertness. Circadian misalignment caused by chronic have psychological, cardiovascular and/or metabolic functions. causes disruption, which with longer duration later evening. shorter wavelengths preferentially disturb secretion shifts, even if is not bright. This review be helpful understand suggests it necessary consider characteristics light, beyond mere intensity.
