Abstract We present optical observations of the Halley-type comet 12P/Pons–Brooks (12P) on its approach to perihelion. The was active even in first at ∼8 au. Starting ∼4 au, 12P exhibited an extraordinary series outbursts, which brightness changed by a factor up 100 and coma morphology transformed under action radiation pressure into distinctive “horned” appearance. Individual outburst dust masses are several ×10 9 kg, with kinetic energies ∼10 14 J, release times 4 s, effective power 10 W. These properties most consistent with, although do not definitively establish, origin crystallization amorphous water ice related trapped supervolatile gases. This interpretation is supported observation that specific energy comparable (both 5 J kg −1 ).
