Beyond the Scales: A Qualitative Study on the Biopsychosocial Impacts of Time-Restricted Eating in Free-Living Individuals

Time-restricted
eating
(TRE)
has
gained
attention
as
an
effective
approach
for
weight
management
and
overall
well-being
by
focusing
on
limiting
the
window,
rather
than
reducing
calories.
This
study
explores
biopsychosocial
impacts
of
TRE
in
free-living
individuals
using
a
qualitative
design.
Twenty-one
adults
(aged
27–60
years)
from
Western
Australia
who
had
practised
at
least
three
months
were
purposively
recruited,
semi-structured
interviews
conducted.
The
data
analysed
thematic
analysis
to
identify
key
themes.
participants
reported
range
benefits,
including
loss,
reduced
joint
pain,
better
digestion,
improved
mental
clarity,
increased
energy,
more
positive
body
image.
Socially,
facilitated
simplified
daily
routines
but
also
introduced
challenges,
such
disruptions
social
interactions
family
meal
dynamics.
Some
mixed
negative
reported,
changes
sleep
exercise
patterns.
These
findings
highlight
TRE’s
potential
holistic
dietary
intervention.
Further
research,
particularly
well-controlled,
randomised
controlled
trials
longitudinal
studies,
is
needed
confirm
these
insights
guide
their
appropriate
application
clinical
public
health
settings.

"It just made sense to me!” A Qualitative Exploration of Individual Motivation for Time-Restricted Eating

Time-Restricted
Eating
(TRE),
a
form
of
intermittent
fasting,
has
gained
popularity
for
weight
control
and
metabolic
health.
It
is
not
incorporated
into
dietary
clinical
guidelines,
hence
generally
being
recommended
to
the
public.
This
qualitative
study
explores
how
individuals
have
discovered
TRE
as
practice
their
motivations
practising
it.
Using
purposive
snowball
sampling,
we
recruited
21
participants
who
had
engaged
in
at
least
3
months
(range
over
5
years).
In-depth
interviews
were
conducted
with
an
interview
guide
developed
based
on
Health
Belief
Model.
We
utilised
inductive
coding
process
thematic
analysis
identify
factors
motivating
adoption.
Seven
main
themes
emerged:

dissatisfaction
resistance
prior
or
traditional
approaches,
(2)
perceived
broader
health
benefits,
(3)
principles
deemed
logical,
(4)
low
no
cost
adoption,
(5)
manageable
psychosocial
barriers,
(6)
non-restrictive
easy
use,
(7)
compatibility
personal
lifestyle.
provided
insights
early
phase
adoption
among
real
world
settings.
Future
research
should
explore
practitioners'
perspectives
better
understand
acceptability
potential
use
management
approach.

This
study
aimed
to
evaluate
the
impact
of
time-restricted
eating
(TRE)
on
neuro-physiological
parameters,
objective
and
subjective
sleep,
pulmonary
capacity,
postural
balance
among
women
with
excess
body
weight.
Methods:

a
TRE
group
