The study of consciousness has developed well-controlled, rigorous methods for manipulating and measuring consciousness. Yet, in the process, experimental paradigms grew farther away from everyday conscious unconscious processes, which raises concern ecological validity. In this review, we suggest that field can benefit adopting a more approach, akin to other fields cognitive science. There, approach challenged some existing hypotheses, yielded stronger effects, enabled new research questions. We argue such move is critical studying consciousness, where tend be artificial small effect sizes are relatively prevalent. identify three paths doing so—changing stimuli settings, changing measures, questions themselves—and review works have already started implementing approaches. While acknowledging inherent challenges, call increasing validity studies.
