In this review article I briefly describe lipid self-assembly, interfacial curvature, and lyotropic phase diagrams. then go on to how the behaviour can be controlled, structure of phases tuned, by various parameters such as temperature, hydrostatic pressure, or addition amphiphilic molecules fatty acids, diacylglycerols, cholesterol. give a few illustrations structures/phases may play roles in lipid-based biotechnologies, biomembrane systems.

Orientation-dependent photonic bandgaps in gold-dust weevil scales and their titania bioreplicates DOI Creative Commons

The scales of the gold-dust weevil Hypomeces squamosus are green because three-dimensional diamond-type chitin–air photonic crystals with an average periodicity about 430 nm and a chitin fill fraction 0.44. A single scale usually contains one to three crystallites different lattice orientations. reciprocal space images reflection spectra obtained from domains indicated partial bandgap in wavelength range 450 650 nm. Light reflected {111}-oriented is green-yellow. blue, {100}-oriented exhibits polarization conversion, rotating angle linearly polarized light. overall coloration, resulting reflections many scales, close uniformly diffuse random orientation domains. Using titania sol–gel chemistry, we produced negative replicas that exhibited 70 120 redshift bandgap, depending on orientation. shift {100} supported by full-wave optical modeling dual diamond network exchanged (0.56) material refractive index 1.55 2.00. study suggests effective 3D similar films. demonstrates potential replicating complex biophotonic structures using technique. Optimization process could lead customizable bandgaps might be used novel materials.
