A morphological trait can have multiple functions shaped by varying selective forces. Bare parts in birds, such as wattles, casques and combs, are known to function both signalling thermoregulation. Studies demonstrated structures targets of sexual selection via female choice several species Galliformes (junglefowl, turkeys grouse), though other studies shown some role thermoregulation (guineafowl). Here, we tested fundamental hypotheses regarding the evolution maintenance bare Galliformes. Using a phylogeny that included nearly 90% order, evaluated natural shaping across different clades. We found combination environmental putative sexually selected traits strongly predicted variation for males females When analysis is restricted largest family, Phasianidae (pheasants, junglefowl allies), were primary predictors parts. Our results suggest important but primarily under strong within Phasianidae.

Zoos play dual roles in wildlife conservation and providing recreational experiences for visitors urban green spaces. However, the impacts of thermal environments on both visitor comfort captive animal welfare remain unexplored, which is an important aspect to address improving overall zoo management. This study investigated conditions at Jinan Zoo, China, over 20 summer days. Questionnaires were used collect viewing satisfaction, while mitigation behaviors 70 blue peafowls recorded under various on-site. The findings showed that wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) neutral range was 20.1-24.4 °C, with a significant drop numbers when WBGT exceeded 35.5 °C. Visitors higher satisfaction (aVSV) scores more heat tolerant. reduced their activity levels displayed feather-spreading gular flutter 26.4-30.4 especially during peak hours. Our also sensation most affected by radiation, whereas peafowl stress likely influenced air temperature, followed humidity radiation. These offer practical insights designing enclosures areas improve hot weather.
