Research on human navigation by psychologists and neuroscientists has come mainly from a limited range of environments participants inhabiting western countries. By contrast, numerous anthropological accounts illustrate the diverse ways in which cultures adapt to their surrounding environment navigate. Here, we provide an overview these studies relate them cognitive science research. The diversity cues traditional is much higher multimodal compared with experiments laboratory. It typically involves integrated system methods, drawing detailed understanding environmental cues, specific tools, forms part broader cultural system. We highlight recent methodological developments for measuring skill modelling behaviour that will aid future research into how culture shape navigation.

An often-proposed enhancement for mobile maps to aid assisted navigation is the presentation of landmark information, yet understanding manner in which they should be displayed limited. In this study, we investigated whether visualization landmarks as 3D map symbols with either an abstract or realistic style influenced subsequent processing those during route navigation. We utilized a real-world electroencephalography approach question by combining several tools developed overcome challenges typically encountered neuroscience research. coregistered eye-movement and EEG recordings from 45 participants navigated through environment using map. Analyses fixation event-related potentials revealed that amplitude parietal P200 component was enhanced when fixated real world were visualized on style, frontal latencies prolonged depicted compared features not presented map, but only male participants. contrast, did observe any significant effects visual P1-N1 peaks late positive component. Overall, findings indicate cognitive matching process between seen previously facilitated more display, while low-level perceptual recall associated information are unaffected style.

Movie-watching fMRI has emerged as a theoretically viable platform for studying neurobiological substrates of affective states and emotional disorders such pathological anxiety. However, using anxiety-inducing movie clips to probe relevant impacted by psychopathology could risk exacerbating in-scanner movement, decreasing signal quality/quantity thus statistical power. This be especially problematic in target populations children who typically move more the scanner. Consequently, we assessed: (1) extent which an clip altered data quality (movement, censoring, DVARS) pediatric sample with without anxiety (n = 78); (2) investigated interactions between symptoms movie-attenuated motion highly powered, transdiagnostic 2058). Our results suggest anxiogenic movie-watching fact reduces movement compared resting-state, increasing quantity/quality data. In one measure, appeared impact motion, but effect was small. Given potential boosts quality, future developmental neuroimaging studies may benefit from use paradigms.

Abstract The rapid global urbanisation has intensified the need to understand complex interactions and impacts that city environments have on human physical or mental health well-being. Traditional indoor laboratory-based approaches conduct experiments in well controlled settings but, while advantageous for their conditions, they often lack ecological validity. To address this gap, we present “eMOTIONAL Cities Walker Backpack” — a wearable unit developed synchronously collecting multi-modal data dynamic real-world settings. Designed both outdoor use, backpack integrates environmental (for microclimate, air pollution noise) physiological sensors (including electroencephalography, eye-tracking wrist-based biosensors cardiovascular monitoring) enable study of experience naturalistic urban environments. In paper, describe technical specifications implementation technology during acquisitions across selected locations Lisbon. We also highlight its potential methodological comparison with traditional lab-based tasks (particularly through use equivalent sensing technologies), thus advancing field translational research studies.

Humans are highly social, typically without this ability requiring noticeable efforts. Yet, such social fluency poses challenges both for the human brain to compute and scientists study. Over last few decades, neuroscientific research of sociality has witnessed a shift in focus from single-brain analysis complex dynamics occurring across several brains, posing questions about what these mean how they relate multifaceted behavioural models. We propose term 'Relational Neuroscience' collate interdisciplinary field devoted modelling inter-brain subserving connections, spanning real-time joint experiences long-term bonds. Hyperscanning, i.e., simultaneously measuring activity multiple individuals, proven be promising technique investigate dynamics. Here, we discuss hyperscanning can help within Relational Neuroscience, considering variety subfields, including cooperative interactions dyads groups, empathy, attachment bonding, developmental neuroscience. While presenting Neuroscience light hyperscanning, our discussion also takes into account behaviour, physiology endocrinology properly interpret contexts. consider strengths but limitations caveats answer interacting people. Abstract A child’s social world is complex and rich, but has traditionally been assessed with conventional experiments where children are presented repeated stimuli on a screen. These assessments impoverished relative to the dynamics of interactions in real life, can be challenging implement preschoolers, who struggle comply strict lab rules. The current work meets need develop new platforms assess preschoolers’ development, by presenting unique virtual-reality set-up combined wearable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). As proof-of-principle, we validated this platform measuring brain activity during self-guided interaction 3-to-5-year-olds, which under-investigated, yet crucial understand basis preschoolers. 37 preschoolers chose an partner from one 4 human-like avatars different gender age. We recorded spontaneous fluctuations frontal temporoparietal regions (notably engaged social-categorization preference) while played bubble-popping game preferred assigned avatar. 60% participants play same-gender same-age However, result was driven females (>80% vs. 50% males). Different fronto-temporoparietal connectivity patterns when playing two were observed, especially females. showed feasibility using novel naturalistically preference at behavioural level. This provides first proof-of-principle for cutting-edge technologies naturalistic study opening avenues research.

Inhibitory control is essential for our everyday lives. Despite this, it commonly assessed using non-naturalistic assessments. In this systematic review, we argue the importance of taking an ecological approach to assess cognition. The aims are present state-of-knowledge in naturalistic assessments inhibitory control, focusing on their methodological characteristics, including psychometric properties and user experience. PubMed, PsycINFO Web Science were searched until September 2024. Studies included if they used at least one method assessing inhibition. studies (N=64) grouped into three categories: gamification, virtual reality, brief, repeated participants' usual environment form momentary Sample sizes spanned orders magnitude (N=12-22,098). We report considerable heterogeneity types tasks used, details reported. Nonetheless, generally comparable with standardised equivalents, although some mixed-domain constructs. Tasks feasible acceptable participants, high completion rates engagement. Recommendations future research discussed.
