The processes underlying mate choice profoundly influence the dynamics of sexual selection and evolution male traits. Consistent preference for certain phenotypes may erode genetic variation in populations through directional selection, whereas divergent preferences (e.g., genetically compatible mates) provide one mechanism to maintain such variation. However, relative contributions these across episodes remain unknown. Using Drosophila melanogaster , we followed fate genotypes, previously scored their overall reproductive value compatibility with different female pre- postmating selection. When pairs competitor males differed intrinsic quality female, both factors influenced outcomes from mating success paternity but a varying degree between stages. These results add further dimensions our understanding how interactions genotypes forms shape ultimately trait evolution.

Abstract Early life conditions can have long-lasting fitness effects on organisms. In insects, crowding during larval stages impose a significant constraint adult phenotypes due to increased intraspecific competition for resources, which modulate males’ success in pre- and post-mating adulthood. Evidence male seminal fluid allocation exists but is limited small subset of well-known proteins (Sfps), often overlooks the interactions between female phenotypes. We currently lack comprehensive understanding how interact affect production, composition, transfer wider proteome. Here, we manipulated Drosophila melanogaster (low versus high) males females generate individuals with large body size, respectively. mated fully factorial design, measured abundance, Sfps. Large produced Sfps significantly higher abundances, yet this difference was marginal not detected when were analysed individually. Conversely, transferred greater quantities much their proteome than did males. When analysing individually, 10 abundances by Our results suggest that invest more each mating opportunity, potentially as response overall fewer opportunities reduced or cues high population density. This work provides an insight into early ejaculate D. sheds light physiological behavioural responses developmental insects.

Ejaculate proteins are key mediators of post-mating sexual selection and conflict, as they can influence both male fertilization success female reproductive physiology. However, the extent sources genetic variation condition dependence ejaculate proteome largely unknown. Such knowledge could reveal targets mechanisms inform about relative costs allocation different components, each with its own potential fitness consequences. Here, we used liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry to characterize whole-ejaculate protein composition across 12 isogenic lines Drosophila melanogaster that were reared on a high- or low-quality diet. We discovered new in transferred inferred their origin system. further found was mainly determined by genotype identity genotype-specific responses larval diet, no clear overall diet effect. Nutrient restriction increased proteolytic activity shifted balance between function RNA metabolism. Our results open avenues for exploring intricate role genotypes environment shaping composition, studying functional dynamics evolutionary multivariate complexity.
