Abstract
Early
life
conditions
can
have
long-lasting
fitness
effects
on
organisms.
In
insects,
crowding
during
larval
stages
impose
a
significant
constraint
adult
phenotypes
due
to
increased
intraspecific
competition
for
resources,
which
modulate
males’
success
in
pre-
and
post-mating
adulthood.
Evidence
male
seminal
fluid
allocation
exists
but
is
limited
small
subset
of
well-known
proteins
(Sfps),
often
overlooks
the
interactions
between
female
phenotypes.
We
currently
lack
comprehensive
understanding
how
interact
affect
production,
composition,
transfer
wider
proteome.
Here,
we
manipulated
Drosophila
melanogaster
(low
versus
high)
males
females
generate
individuals
with
large
body
size,
respectively.

abundances,

difference

detected
when

Ejaculate
proteins
are
key
mediators
of
post-mating
sexual
selection
and
conflict,
as
they
can
influence
both
male
fertilization
success
female
reproductive
physiology.
However,
the
extent
sources
genetic
variation
condition
dependence
ejaculate
proteome
largely
unknown.
Such
knowledge
could
reveal
targets
mechanisms
inform
about
relative
costs
allocation

components,
each
with
its
own
potential
fitness

spectrometry

characterize
whole-ejaculate
protein
composition
across
12
isogenic
lines
Drosophila
melanogaster

reared
on
a
high-

low-quality
diet.

discovered
new

Interplay between male quality and male-female compatibility across episodes of sexual selection

The
processes
underlying
mate
choice
profoundly
influence
the
dynamics
of
sexual
selection
and
evolution
male
traits.
Consistent
preference
for
certain
phenotypes
may
erode
genetic
variation
in
populations
through
directional
selection,
whereas
divergent
preferences
(e.g.,
genetically
compatible
mates)
provide
one
mechanism
to
maintain
such
variation.
However,
relative
contributions
these
across
episodes
remain
unknown.
Using
Drosophila
melanogaster
,
we
followed
fate
genotypes,
previously
scored
their
overall
reproductive
value
compatibility
with
different
female
pre-
postmating
selection.
When
pairs
competitor
males
differed
intrinsic
quality
female,
both
factors
influenced
outcomes
from
mating
success
paternity
but
a
varying
degree
between
stages.
These
results
add
further
dimensions
our
understanding
how
interactions
genotypes
forms
shape
ultimately
trait
evolution.
