Since geodiversity encompasses a broad spectrum of the earth’s natural features and provides essential ecosystem services, it plays critical role in environmental conservation, cultural heritage enhancement, sustainable development territory. This paper presents possible actions (use digital knowledge, geosite inventory, geotourism, legislative recognition) through global, regional, local examples: series research public engagement initiatives, including themes International Geodiversity Day (IGD), UNESCO celebration aimed at fostering awareness contribution abiotic nature to daily life stability. The uses case study approach present virtuous circle model that shows how can be used improve stewardship, resource use, identity. interdependences geological education meeting goals (SDGs) United Nations are stressed by this model. They underscore importance getting policy support from which benefits sustained suggest strategies for integrating diversity into conservation practice. is found driver development, thus serving communities, economies, ecosystems.

The Amazon is the largest drainage basin on Earth and contains a wide variety of abiotic landscape features. In spite this, geodiversity in this has not yet been objectively evaluated. We address knowledge gap by combining meta-analysis an existing global map its components with systematic literature review, to identify key characteristics (ADB). also evaluate how these component maps, that are based geology, geomorphology, soils hydrology, could be refined better reflect basin. Our review shows geology—through lithological diversity geological structures—and hydrology—through hydrological processes influence geomorphology soil diversity—are main determinants geodiversity. Based features, ADB can subdivided into three principal regions: (i) Andean orogenic belt western Amazon, (ii) cratons eastern (iii) Solimões-Amazon river system. Additional methods geomorphological have identified. Future research should focus investigating relationship between assess their biodiversity. Such enhance conservation plans for ADB. Geodiversity is a topical concept in earth and environmental sciences. information needed to conserve nature, use ecosystem services achieve sustainable development goals. Despite the increasing demand for geodiversity data, there exists no comprehensive system categorizing geodiversity. Here, we present hierarchically structured taxonomy that potentially applicable mapping quantifying across different regions, environments scales. In this taxonomy, main components of are geology, geomorphology, hydrology pedology. We propose six-level hierarchical where classified at progressively lower taxonomic levels based on their genesis, physical-chemical properties morphology. This can be used compile scientific research various applications value society nature conservation. Ultimately, first step towards developing global taxonomy. article part Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Geodiversity science society'.

Abstract Geodiversity—the diversity of abiotic features and processes the Earth's surface subsurface—is an increasingly used concept in ecological research. A growing body scientific literature has provided evidence positive links between geodiversity biodiversity. These studies highlight potential to improve our understanding biodiversity patterns complement current conservation practices strategies. However, definitions research vary widely. This can hinder progress geodiversity–biodiversity make it difficult synthesize findings across studies. We therefore call for greater awareness how is currently defined more consistent use term ‘geodiversity’

Abstract Geodiversity offers novel insights into biodiversity patterns and their underlying mechanisms, thereby contributing to the development of conservation strategies amid widespread environmental changes human disturbances. However, relationship between geodiversity remains largely unexplored, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. Here, we investigated extent which accounts for fish diversity across dimensions (taxonomic, functional phylogenetic) levels (alpha beta) Lancang‐Mekong River. We first compiled three datasets (i.e. occurrence records, traits phylogenetic relations) seven geofeature group discharge, waterbody, topography, terrestrial cover, landform, soil rock) catchment. Multidimensional were then calculated at alpha beta levels, respectively. Next, assessed influence on multidimensional corresponding using generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) structural equation modelings (SEMs). showed contrasting with showing positive upriver‐downriver gradients, but negative gradients along river continuum. The spatial congruence was weak geofeatures levels. substantially accounted variance both conditional R 2 GLMMs ranging from 0.892 0.996. increase primarily driven by growing variability discharge waterbody types, while mainly influenced rising dissimilarity types. SEMs revealed that indirect effects generally weak. Synthesis applications . Our findings emphasize profound large rivers, revealing its central role shaping through enhancing heterogeneity resource availability. To sustain diversity, it is crucial maintain types preserve linkages among components.
