Identifying the causes and fitness consequences of intraspecific variation in cognitive performance is fundamental to understand how cognition evolves. Selection may act on different traits separately or jointly as part general (GCP) individual. To date, few studies have examined simultaneously whether individual covaries across tasks, relative importance social attributes determining variation, its wild. Here, we tested 38 wild southern pied babblers (

In this conceptual analysis contribution to the special issue on radical embodied cognition, we discuss how cognition can exist with and without representations. We explore concept through lens of judgment decision-making in sports (JDMS). Embodied has featured many investigations human behavior, but no single approach emerged. Indeed, very definitions concepts "embodiment" "cognition" lack consensus, consequently degree "radicalism" is not universally defined, either. paper, address JDMS from a rigid theoretical perspective two approaches: one that assumes there mediation between athlete environment mental representation, another direct contact thus need for representation. Judgment and decision making in sporting officials is a challenging task that involves the use of context. Although process models describe contexts, none existing explains when sports rule-driven making, or game management. The basic idea our work referees subjective threshold to apply management, which may explain this behavior. We propose new dynamic model based on concepts derived from Decision Field Theory. includes two thresholds management (high/low) contact situations (foul/no foul) as approaching one these thresholds. Using example soccer refereeing, we argue if hits aggressive play, then referee shifts applying rules managing game. This approach changes scientific discussion focused what should decide situation other, psychological mechanism underlying referee's change behavior during game, both at intra-individual well inter-individual level.

ABSTRACT Recently, there has been a surge in cognition research using non‐avian reptile systems. As diverse group of animals, reptiles [turtles, the tuatara, crocodylians, and squamates (lizards, snakes amphisbaenids)] are good model systems for answering questions related to cognitive ecology, from role environment on brain, behaviour learning, how social life‐history factors correlate with learning ability. Furthermore, given their variable structure degree sociality, studies have shown that living is not pre‐condition learning. Past demonstrated capable more than just instinctive reactions basic cognition. Despite ability provide answers fundamental growing literature, no recent systematic syntheses this group. Here, we systematically, comprehensively review We identify 92 new investigating included previous reviews topic – affording unique opportunity in‐depth synthesis existing work, its taxonomic distribution, types domains tested methodologies used. Our therefore provides major update our current state knowledge ties collective evidence together under nine umbrella areas: ( i ) habituation behaviour, ii animal training through conditioning, iii avoiding aversive stimuli, iv spatial memory, v during foraging, vi quality quantity discrimination, vii responding change, viii solving novel problems, ix Importantly, gaps propose themes which offer important future opportunities including might influence fitness survival, testing ecologically relevant situations, comparing invasive non‐invasive populations species, To move field forward, it will be immensely build upon descriptive approach whether species can learn task experimental elucidating causal reasons variation within among species. With appropriate methodology, young but rapidly should advance greatly coming years providing significant addressing general ecology beyond.

Well-being and cognition are linked in adulthood, but how the two domains interact during development is currently unclear. Using a complex systems approach, we preregistered modeled relationship between well-being prospective cohort of 1,136 children ages 6 to 7 years 15 years. We found bidirectional interactions that unfold dynamically over time. Higher externalizing symptoms childhood predicted fewer gains planning time (standardized estimate [β] = −0.14, p .019), whereas higher vocabulary smaller increases loneliness (β −0.34, ≤ .001). These were characterized by modifiable risk resilience factors: Relationships parents, friendship quality, socioeconomic status, puberty onset all both cognitive outcomes. Thus, inextricably intertwined may be malleable social biological factors.

Although studies on fish cognition are increasing, consideration of how methodological details influence the ability to detect and measure performance is lagging. Here, in two separate experiments authors compared latency leave start position, make a decision, levels participation success rates (whether entered rewarded chamber as first choice) across different physical designs. Experiments (a) sizes T-mazes, large standard, plus-maze, (b) open choice arenas with either or four doors. Fish T-mazes longer arms took were less likely participate trial than shorter arms. The number options, complexity, maze significantly impacted but did not necessarily impact behavioural measures, that reached chamber. plus-maze had similar latencies box time reach any same-sized T-maze exhibited lower overall success. Similarly, an arena, increasing options - doors potential reward chambers resulted probability There was position closest sides arena resulting enter higher decision Together results allow offer practical suggestions towards optimal design for cognition.
