Abstract
The
striking
structural
variation
seen
in
arthropod
visual
systems
can
be
explained
by
the
overall
quantity
and
spatio-temporal
structure
of
light
within
habitats
coupled
with
developmental
physiological
constraints.
However,
little
is
currently
known
about
how
fine-scale
structures
arise
across
shorter
evolutionary
ecological
scales.
In
this
study,
we
characterise
patterns
interspecific
(between
species),
intraspecific
sexes)
intraindividual
eye
regions)
system
four
ithomiine
butterfly
species.
These
species
are
part
a
diverse
26-Myr-old
Neotropical
radiation
where
changes
mimetic
colouration
associated
shifts
ecology,
such
as
microhabitat
preference.
By
using
combination
selection
analyses
on
opsin
sequences,
in-vivo
ophthalmoscopy,
micro-computed
tomography
(micro-CT),
immunohistochemistry,
confocal
microscopy,
neural
tracing,
quantify
describe
physiological,
anatomical,
molecular
traits
involved
processing.

these
data,
provide
evidence

Understanding
the
origins
of
flower
colour
signalling
to
pollinators
is
fundamental
evolutionary
biology
and
ecology.
Flower
evolves
under
pressure
from
visual
systems
pollinators,
