Abstract The striking structural variation seen in arthropod visual systems can be explained by the overall quantity and spatio-temporal structure of light within habitats coupled with developmental physiological constraints. However, little is currently known about how fine-scale structures arise across shorter evolutionary ecological scales. In this study, we characterise patterns interspecific (between species), intraspecific sexes) intraindividual eye regions) system four ithomiine butterfly species. These species are part a diverse 26-Myr-old Neotropical radiation where changes mimetic colouration associated shifts ecology, such as microhabitat preference. By using combination selection analyses on opsin sequences, in-vivo ophthalmoscopy, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, neural tracing, quantify describe physiological, anatomical, molecular traits involved processing. Using these data, provide evidence substantial Ithomiini, including: i) relaxed opsins, perhaps mediated habitat preference, ii) physiology anatomy, iii) extensive sexual dimorphism, including complete absence butterfly-specific optic neuropil males some We conclude that considerable exist insect radiations, hinting at lability to rapidly develop specialisations distinct ecologies, acting both perceptual, processing, level. Summary statement Physiological, radiation, evolve environments.

'Accounting for the sensory abilities of animals is critical in experimental design.' No researcher would disagree with this statement, yet it often case that we inadvertently fall anthropocentric biases and use ourselves as reference point. This paper discusses risks adopting an view when working non-human animals, unintended consequences has on our designs results. To aim, provide general examples bias from different fields animal research, a particular focus cognition behaviour, lay out potential human-based perspective. Abstract Behavioral manipulation (BM) is a multimodal control approach based on the interference with stimuli mediating insect perception and interaction surroundings. BM could represent win–win strategy for management of vector-borne plant pathogens as bacterium Xylella fastidiosa , since it reduce number vectors alighting host plants and, consequently, chances transmission to occur. In this review, we summarized current knowledge highlighted gaps in information (i) how X. general, more specifically meadow spittlebug Philaenus spumarius locate accept ; (ii) behavioral techniques be applied disrupt vector–host interaction. Finally, discussed diverse strategies combined other integrated pest tools protect olive groves from inoculation fastidious bacterium.

Understanding the origins of flower colour signalling to pollinators is fundamental evolutionary biology and ecology. Flower evolves under pressure from visual systems pollinators, like birds insects, establish global signatures among flowers with similar pollinators. However, an understanding ancient this relationship remains elusive. Here, we employ computer simulations generate artificial backgrounds assembled real material sample spectra rocks, leaves dead plant materials, against which test flowers' visibility bees. Our results indicate how colours differ their in strength, distributions salient reflectance features when perceived by these key reveal possible colours. Since Hymenopteran perception evolved before flowers, terrestrial chromatic context for its evolution facilitate flight orientation consisted leaves, sticks bark. Flowers exploited pre-evolved capacities visitors, response evolving signal bees, differently birds, a backdrop other natural materials. Consequently, it appears that today's may be vision diurnal navigating world millennia prior first flowers.
