ABSTRACT All organisms have evolved to respond injury. Cell behaviors like proliferation, migration, and invasion replace missing cells close wounds. However, the role of other wound-induced cell is not understood, including formation syncytia (multinucleated cells). Wound-induced epithelial were first reported around puncture wounds in post-mitotic Drosophila epidermal tissues, but more recently been mitotically competent tissues such as pupal epidermis zebrafish epicardium. The presence active suggests that offer adaptive benefits, it unknown what those benefits are. Here, we use vivo live imaging analyze pupae. We find almost half near a wound fuse form large syncytia. These several routes speed repair: they outpace diploid complete closure; reduce intercalation during pool resources their component concentrate them toward wound. In addition healing, these properties are likely contribute roles development pathology.
