Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) typically hold aberrant beliefs about their body that they struggle to update, including global, prospective ability know and regulate particularly interoceptive states. While clinical, questionnaire studies have provided ample evidence on the role of such in onset, maintenance, treatment AN, psychophysical focused perceptual ‘local’ beliefs. Across two experiments, we examined how women AN (N=86) weight-restored from (AN-WR, N=87), comparison matched healthy controls (HCs, N=180) updated self-efficacy count own heartbeats an adapted heartbeat counting task (HCT). As preregistered, found while patients do not differ accuracy per se, maintain ‘pessimistic’ interoceptive, metacognitive after performance. Modelling using a simplified, computational Bayesian learning framework showed neither local performance, nor retrospective following performance (that themselves were suboptimally updated) seem be sufficient counter update pessimistic, AN. lower rates than controls, revealing tendency base posterior more prior rather prediction errors both belief updating. Further explorations these differences explicit beliefs, latent mechanisms updating, explained by general cognitive flexibility differences, negative mood comorbidity, even acute stage illness.

Abstract The predictive processing framework includes a broad set of ideas, which might be articulated and developed in variety ways, concerning how the brain may leverage models when implementing perception, cognition, decision‐making, motor control. This article provides an up‐to‐date introduction to two most influential theories within this framework: coding active inference. first half paper (Sections 2–5) reviews evolution coding, from early ideas about efficient visual system more general model encompassing theory is characterized terms claims it makes at Marr's computational, algorithmic, implementation levels description, conceptual mathematical connections between Bayesian inference, variational free energy (a quantity jointly evaluating accuracy complexity) are explored. second 6–8) turns recent Like inference assume that perceptual learning processes minimize as means approximating biologically plausible manner. However, these focus primarily on planning decision‐making were not address. Under agent evaluates potential plans (action sequences) based their expected combines anticipated reward information gain). assumed represent world partially observable Markov decision process with discrete time states. Current research applications described, including range simulation work, well studies fitting empirical data. concludes by considering future directions will important for further development both models.

Abstract Objective Bulimia nervosa (BN) is associated with loss-of-control (LOC) eating episodes that frequently occur in response to negative emotions. According recent neurocomputational models, this link could be explained by a failure accurately update beliefs about the body states of high arousal. Specifically, these interoceptive inference models suggest under-relying on signals from one’s sensory experience (“low precision”) and/or over-relying previously held (“excessively precise priors”) lead inaccurate perception and maladaptive behaviors. We conducted an initial test core predictions model BN using self-report measures. Methods compared women ( n = 30) age-, BMI-, full-scale IQ-matched controls 31) trust information two types what can done regulate affect. Within group, we tested interrelations among measures explored their associations LOC frequency. Results Compared healthy controls, group reported lower levels stronger once upset, there little one do, apart eating, self-regulate. These were each other trust. Beliefs uncontrollability emotion more frequent subjective binge-eating episodes. Conclusions Findings provide support for account BN: low (“sensory may promote overreliance “prior beliefs” effects emotions, ultimately interfering accurate updating strategies emotions maintain eating. Low trust, strong expectations underpinnings promising combined treatment targets BN.
