Perspectives on tracking data reuse across biodata resources

Abstract
Motivation
Data
reuse
is
a
common
and
vital
practice
in
molecular
biology
enables
the
knowledge
gathered
over
recent
decades
to
drive
discovery
innovation
life
sciences.
Much
of
this
has
been
collated
into
databases,
such
as
UniProtKB,
these
resources
derive
enormous
value
from
sharing
data
among
themselves.
However,
quantifying
documenting
kind
remains
challenge.
Results
The
article
reports
on
one-day
virtual
workshop
hosted
by
UniProt
Consortium
March
2023,
attended
representatives
biodata
resources,
experts
management,
NIH
program
managers.
Workshop
discussions
focused
strategies
for
tracking
reuse,
best
practices
reusing
data,
challenges
associated
with
tracking.
Surveys
showed
that
widespread,
but
critical
information
reproducibility
sometimes
lacking.
Challenges
include
costs
tensions
between
open
sharing,
restrictive
licenses,
difficulties
commercial
use.
Recommendations
emerged
discussion
include:
development
standardized
formats
education
about
obstacles
posed
continued
recognition
funding
agencies
management
activity
requires
dedicated
resources.

Quest

(QfO)

benchmark
service

hosts
a
wide
range
of
standardized
benchmarks

consortium,

to
