Working memory is an evolving concept. Our understanding of the neural functions that support WM develops iteratively alongside approaches used to study it, and both can be profoundly shaped by available tools prevailing theoretical paradigms. Here, organizers 2024 Memory Symposium – inspired this year’s meeting highlight current trends looming questions in working research.

Previous research has shown that, when multiple similar items are maintained in working memory, recall precision declines. Less is known about how heterogeneous sets of across different features within and between modalities impact precision. In two experiments, we investigated modality (Experiment 1, n = 79) feature-specific 2, 154) load effects on memory performance. First, found a cross-modal advantage continuous recall: Orientations that memorized together with pitch recalled more precisely than orientations another orientation. The results our second experiment, however, suggest this not pure effect sensory but rather feature-dependent effect. We combined orientations, pitches, colors pairs. memorizing color benefits orientation to extent as the benefit. To investigate absence interference held analyzed subjective reports strategies used for features. although pitches rely almost exclusively strategies, only visually also abstract verbal strategies. Thus, stimuli presented, they might be represented by independent neural circuits. Our storage organized modality-, feature-, strategy-dependent way.
