Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis are a sister species pair that have been used as model for studies of reproductive isolation speciation almost 100 years owing to their close evolutionary history, well characterized genetic differences, overlapping geographic distribution. Adaptive divergence and increased genetic differentiation among populations can lead to reproductive isolation. In Lake Constance, Germany, a population of invasive three-spined stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) is currently diverging into littoral pelagic ecotypes, which both nest in the zone. We hypothesized that assortative mating behaviour contributes isolation between these ecotypes performed behavioural experiment females could choose two nest-guarding males. Behaviour was recorded, data on traits relevant mate choice were collected. Both same different courted with equal vigour. However, there significant interaction effect male female level aggression females. Littoral more aggressive towards males, This indicates rejection males spite fact larger, intensely red-coloured than males—all sticklebacks generally select for. study documents emergence barriers during early an rapidly diversifying discusses their putative role facilitating adaptive radiation within this species.

Abstract The evolution of complete reproductive isolation hinges on the cumulative action isolating barriers that can manifest throughout life cycle an organism. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding features underlying origin and maintenance species requires assessing relative contributions distinct to overall isolation. Here we characterize multiple interrelated across various developmental stages nematode sister Caenorhabditis remanei latens . We quantified F1 hybrid male sterility characterized phenotypic causes associated with abnormalities in germline as well non-germline gonad somatic tissues, uncovering complex suite defects contributing strong postzygotic Despite these multifarious barrier traits, assays testing for interspecies sperm transfer under “choice” conditions did not yield evidence premating In contrast other pairs, also found no ectopic migration acts postmating-prezygotic barrier. constellation hybrids points polygenic or highly pleiotropic basis dysfunction implicates more rapid intrinsic than prezygotic organisms.

Parasitoid wasps may well be the most species-rich animal group on Earth, and host-parasitoid interactions thereby one of common types species interactions. Understanding major mechanisms underlying diversification in parasitoids should a high priority, not least order to predict consequences from extinction rates currently observed. The two hypotheses explaining host-associated are escape-and-radiate hypothesis oscillation hypothesis, where former assumes that key innovations drivers radiation bursts, whereas latter rather depends processes acting standing genetic variation influences host use. This paper reviews recent literature parasitoid speciation light these identify potential use variability diversification. also calls upon theoretical advances similar system, plant-butterfly interactions, provide shortcuts development theories diversity wasps.

Sexual selection can directly contribute to reproductive isolation and is an important mechanism that lead speciation. Lek-mating one of the most extreme forms sexual selection, but surprisingly does not seem preclude occasional hybridization in nature. However, among lekking species may still be trivial if against offspring with intermediate phenotypes prohibits introgression. Here we investigate this further by sequencing genomes nearly all bird-of-paradise (Paradisaeidae) 10 museum specimens putative hybrid origin. We find intergeneric indeed takes place despite differentiation form, plumage, behavior. In parallel, contemporary contain widespread signatures past introgression, demonstrating has repeatedly resulted shared genetic variation strong isolation. Our study raises questions about extrinsic factors modulate probability evolutionary consequences introgressive between species.
