Purpose This study aims to explore the current development status, spatiotemporal evolution, and spatial effects of niche fitness in China’s regional digital innovation ecosystems (DIEs), providing guidance for coordinated innovation. Design/methodology/approach Utilizing ecological theory, this develops an evaluation system DIEs fitness, calculates evolutionary momentum across 31 provinces (including municipalities autonomous regions, excluding Hong Kong, Macau Taiwan) China from 2014 2022 analyzes their characteristics. And a dynamic Durbin model is employed assess effects. Findings The findings reveal that 2022, exhibited overall upward trend, particularly eastern regions. Fitness was higher east south lower west north. Resource technology steadily increased, while community slightly declined. Both individual element demonstrate significant temporal inertia, with also exhibiting spillover Originality/value applies theory DIEs, offering novel perspective on dynamics theoretical support optimizing policies, promoting balanced advancing twin transition process.
