Addressing the global challenge of promoting digital transformation in rural areas and reducing urban–rural divide is crucial. This study explores digitization within framework tourism literature, an area that has received limited scholarly attention. Utilizing economic geography methodologies, this research examines multiscale relationship between development efficiency at county level. Purpose Digitalization in hospitality and tourism (DHT) is undergoing a profound revolution, yet its actual effect remains overlooked. This paper aims to delve into the of DHT uncover underlying mechanisms that trigger subtle success. Design/methodology/approach Triangulation was used by leveraging complementary multisource data mixed methods explore DHT’s challenges. The incorporation of digital technologies in hotels worldwide is moving forward at the same pace as recovery tourism sector itself following COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers have looked this topic from perspective suppliers and consumers, but little research has been carried out on hotels' internal digitalisation processes understanding their technological priorities to become more competitive.
