Scarcity of feed ingredients, unregulated mills, and limited monitoring mycotoxin levels in increase the risk exposure for poultry sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined mycotoxins from 122 Kenyan broiler farms an association between on-farm handling practices levels. Using a validated multi-mycotoxin liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method (LC-MS/MS), all samples contained at least one 93 % (n=113) had >3 mycotoxins. The most prevalent EU-regulated detected were fumonisins (93 %; 79.2 - 1285.3 μg/kg), deoxynivalenol (88 96.6 2131.2 aflatoxins (34 4.6 87.8 ochratoxin A (4 range 14.90 59.20 μg/kg). Deoxynivalenol, fumonisins, zearalenone frequently co-occurred samples. Among surveyed farms, 33 (n= 40) subclinical to deoxynivalenol, while 14 7 faced similar risks total respectively. Univariate analysis found no significant associations farm-specific feed. high co-occurrence low moderate concentrations compound selected farms. While these pose potential risk, direct link health outcomes was found. Our findings highlight need further research explore effects on broilers develop context-specific level guidelines region.

Mycotoxins, toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi, pose a significant threat to food safety and human health. The occurrence of mycotoxins in commodities necessitates accurate reliable detection methods. Advanced techniques, such as chromatographic techniques immunochemical assays, have improved sensitivity specificity. However, the lack standardized reference material, particularly less privileged countries, hinders method validation proficiency testing, ultimately affecting mycotoxin testing regulation. Moreover, these are complex they require specialized equipment, well-trained personnel, thus limiting their practical applications. This comprehensive review provides an up-to-date overview recent advancements It examines crucial role standards materials for ensuring results analysis agriculture commodities. addresses emerging challenges, knowledge gaps, future research directions material development. By synthesizing existing literature, this aims provide valuable resources researchers, policymakers, other stakeholders safety, highlighting importance integrated approaches mitigate contamination safety.

During the production and storage of agricultural products, molds frequently occur as contaminants that can produce a wide range secondary metabolites, most important which are mycotoxins. To solve these problems, industry uses various methods, products processes. This review examines latest advances in novel non-thermal technologies for post-harvest inactivation filamentous fungi reduction These include high pressure processes (HPP), ozone treatment, UV light, blue pulsed electric fields (PEF), cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), electron beams, ultrasound (US) nanoparticles. Using data from previous studies, this provides an overview primary mechanisms action recent results obtained using emphasizes limitations challenges associated with each technology. The innovative methods discussed here have been shown to be safe efficient tools reducing food mold contamination infection. However, effectiveness is highly dependent on fungal species structural characteristics New findings related mycotoxins underline successful application it essential carefully determine optimize certain key parameters order achieve satisfactory results. Finally, highlights discusses future directions technologies. It they meet consumer demand clean without compromising nutritional sensory qualities.
