The Eucalyptus snout beetle (Gonipterus sp. n. 2) is a destructive invasive pest of plantations, responsible for significant defoliation and wood yield losses globally. Native to Australia, this has adapted thrive on diverse hosts, overcoming their chemical defences. However, the mechanisms by which Gonipterus tolerates or utilises these plant defence metabolites remain poorly understood. In South Africa, 2 poses threat plantations causing extensive leading substantial reductions in growth production. This study investigates relationship between diet, host species, gut microbiome 2. Using controlled feeding experiments, beetles were reared artificial, semi-artificial, natural diets, as well two genotypes with distinct secondary metabolite profiles. High-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed shifts bacterial diversity composition across diets. Natural diets supported most microbial communities, while artificial fostered homogenised dominated opportunistic taxa like Serratia. Host-specific effects observed frass microbiota, biotransformation monoterpenes into less toxic derivatives. results highlight plasticity enables metabolic adaptability resilience environments. flexibility underpins invasiveness Gonipterus, emphasising role symbionts Understanding interactions offers novel insights microbiome-targeted management strategies, providing sustainable approach mitigate impact global forestry.

ABSTRACT Root rot in Camellia oleifera complicates the development of targeted control measures owing to its complex aetiology. Although breeding resistant varieties C. presents a promising solution, research into cultivation strategies and potential resistance mechanisms against root remains limited. In this study, we investigated six cultivars that exhibit varying levels rot. We conducted transcriptome analysis, measurements soil physicochemical properties an analysis fungal microbiome explore relationship between Fusarium ‐induced flavonoid compounds rhizosphere. The cultivar CL18 demonstrated superior performance concerning incidence, health status expression genes associated with biosynthesis study. Significant differences were observed composition diversity rhizosphere communities among various . abundance was low, negative correlation identified content Our study uncovers role flavonoids rot, thereby offering new for disease management cultivars.

Research on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-pest interactions has prioritized Cry toxin receptors, with limited attention to gut bacteria's role in modulating Bt sensitivity. This study identified two Enterobacter strains Plutella xylostella opposing effects Cry1Ac susceptibility. hormaechei (PxG15) degraded protoxin and activated the proPO-AS JNK pathway, which reduced Cry1Ac's damage midgut while limiting invasion of bacteria into hemolymph. Although asburiae (PxG1) rapidly proPO-AS, pathway was a much slower weaker mode when compared PxG15, attenuated repairing efficiency under treatment Cry1Ac, leading death resulting from sepsis quick illustrates intricate interrelationships among pest's bacteria, its immune system, offering novel insights how shape pest survival following exposure.

Abstract BACKGROUND Sap‐feeding insects like aphids can harbor a complex of bacterial symbionts, including primary nutritional symbiont and secondary symbionts that may influence various traits such as resistance to parasitoids entomopathogens well fitness. This study explores the presence impact facultative symbiont, Hamiltonella defensa , in major pest aphid, green peach aphid Myzus persicae focusing particularly on its role parasitoid resistance, an area has not been previously characterized. RESULTS We detected Buchnera aphidicola H. endosymbionts population M. collected from Tehran, Iran. Using antibiotic treatments, we mostly removed generated line with only low level symbiont. The parasitism rate Aphidius matricariae significantly increased this compared untreated controls. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis indicated densities B. were affected following parasitism. Twenty‐four hours after parasitism, density phage (APSE, Acyrthosiphon pisum endosymbiont) controls, while decreased. Reverse transcription PCR (RT‐qPCR) APSE encoding toxins revealed high levels YDp toxin at 24 h post‐parasitism. CONCLUSION These findings indicate APSE‐3 bacteriophage is present likely confers through toxin. Overall, these results suggest partly protect against have implications for biological control programs targeting insect pest. © 2025 Society Chemical Industry.
