Abstract The global pet trade provides a pathway for introduced species to invade new environments. Most studies use data as an indirect proxy propagule pressure exerted by the trade. Instead, we quantify reported rate of loss captive birds, assess factors that might influence this rate, simulate survival and retrieval birds overall cumulative on environment. We used online listings lost estimate exerts establishment bird in Aotearoa–New Zealand. Listings from two popular websites were monitored daily over 3.5 years, information was recorded frequency, location, composition characteristics events. investigated range may events, such season human population size. also developed simulation approach investigate Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. A total 1205 at least 33 nationwide during our monitoring period, 92% which parrots. found higher areas size median income, lower winter months. Simulation results predict any given month Auckland there is average 491 escaped including 136 potential breeding pairs, seven chance one locality has male/female pair large exceeds 80%. Synthesis applications . Online pets provide excellent source identify with high specific localities. identified parrot high‐risk invasion pathway, they contribute consistent pressure. preventative approach, banning sale these species, most appropriate pest management strategy reducing probability impact.

This research addresses the paucity of academic exploration into pigeon racing, a globally recognized sport with limited scholarly attention. While prior studies focused on ornithology and medicine, this paper pioneers comprehensive examination from geographical perspective. Employing quantitative methodology, study surveyed 712 members South African National Pigeon Organization (SANPO), providing nuanced understanding demographics, organizational structures, subjective values, economic impacts within racing. The study's findings reveal dominance males in sport, its multi-generational nature, widespread participation across diverse income groups. SANPO, 3,540 members, emerges as crucial entity sport's landscape. categorizes fanciers small, medium, large groups based bird ownership, presenting insights their socio-demographic context motivations. Pigeon-related activities are explored, emphasizing familial youth development aspects. analysis highlights industry's substantial job creation estimates total worth between R528,968,608 R1,620,390,112. By shedding light understudied aims to stimulate further provide foundation for informed discussions cultural, economic, social aspects

The global increase in the pet trade and ownership of birds has heightened introduction emerging invasive vertebrate species. We analyzed online databases lost, found, sighted non-native bird reports South Africa to evaluate statuses, investigate geographic patterns, assess species trends, determine factors associated with lost birds. identified a total 1467 case representing 77 across nine families from websites (n = 3) Facebook pages 13). Most were within large cities, populated provinces, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape. Psittacidae, Psittaculidae, Cacatuidae most dominant families, African grey (Psittacus erithacus), Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) among top reported as lost. Lower-priced commonly there was no association between species’ price likelihood being found. In addition, we found positive relationship number shops, human population size, docility. There sharp cases 2019 onwards; however, males more frequently Our findings highlight challenges regulating monitoring need address kept conservation efforts. Online resources can be effective tools for passive surveillance species, especially potentially ones.

The global trade of non-native pet birds has increased in recent decades, and this accelerated the introduction invasive wild. This study employed ensemble species distribution modelling (eSDM) to assess potential habitat suitability environmental predictor variables influencing bird reported lost sighted South Africa. We used data information on found from previous studies establish describe scenarios how may transition captivity Our revealed that models fitted performed well predicting for African grey (

The Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri (Scopoli, 1769) has become invasive in several countries, including South Africa, mainly through the pet trade releases and escapees. We conducted an online questionnaire survey targeting residents Durban, eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, Africa. aimed to determine distribution, habitat diet of Parakeet. also determined if public perceived parakeets as pests control measures were supported. found that many parakeet sightings reported Durban North, primarily around shopping centres. Approximately 64.5% respondents provided feeding stations for parakeets, with most providing seeds grains. A total 173 (55.4%) considered a pest. chase nine bird species, which seven native two non-natives. Most stated should not be controlled. Lovebirds (genus Agapornis of family Psittaculidae) are a group small, colourful parrot species endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar, two-thirds which considered have declining populations.
