Abstract Despite global conservation efforts, elasmobranchs still face increased fishing pressure due to high demand for their products. Although certain species have been afforded international and local protection, the value of products in markets incentivises trade protected covertly within marketed fish To address problem, we amplified fragments cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (approximately 595 base pairs) from 164 elasmobranch fins collected Tanzania test whether those concern are among these specimens. Similarly, conducted 130 in‐depth key informant interviews with stakeholders involved elasmobranch‐fin gather diverse perspectives on factors perpetuating trade. Our findings revealed fifteen species, requiem sharks (Carcharhinidae) wedgefishes (Rhinidae) accounting 44.1% 33.8% fins, respectively. Alarmingly, over 70% traded originated threatened elasmobranchs, 36.8% sourced critically endangered species. Unexpectedly, almost 9% were two nationally Carcharhinus longimanus Alopias pelagicus , highlighting existence regulatory gaps that require immediate attention. 91.2% CITES‐listed emphasising severity problem.
