Abstract Background Lockdown measures during the SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic determined radical changes to behavioral and social habits, that were reflected by a reduction in transmission of respiratory pathogens anthropogenic atmospheric emissions. Objective This ecological study aims provide descriptive evaluation on how restrictive impacted Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) referrals for asthma exacerbations, their potentially associated environmental triggers Bologna, densely populated urban area Northern Italy. Methods Files children evaluated acute 2015 2020 at PED Sant'Orsola University Hospital Bologna retrospectively reviewed. Historical daily concentration records particulate (PM 2.5 , PM 10 ) gaseous (NO 2 C 6 H air pollutants, pollen concurrently evaluated, including specific chemical tracers traffic‐related pollution (TRAP). Results In 2020, asthma‐related decreased compared referral rates previous 5 years ( p < 0.01). effect was particularly marked first lockdown period (March May), when drastic drop with high‐priority cases up 85% 54%, average. A concomitant concentrations pollutants observed range 40%–60% Conclusions The lower rate exacerbations childhood this paralleled reduced TRAP levels pandemic. Synergic interactions multiple consequences lockdowns likely contributed exposure ambient fewer infections, identified as most important factor literature.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic infectious caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus SARS-COV-2. Aberrant innate immunity response and cytokine storm are responsible for the syndrome. Apparently, in asthmatic patients, inadequate antiviral immune tendency asthma exacerbation evoked common viruses could explain increased susceptibility to SARS-COV-2 infection. However, has not been suggested be risk factor COVID-19 patients. Therefore, patients some potential protective mechanisms against have hypothesized, like type 2 response, number of eosinophils, overproduction mucus, treatment, along with behavioral factors strictly related asthma, such as social distancing, hygiene measures wearing facemasks, that contribute reduce individual In this mini-review, we will describe current literature regarding children based on evidence available so far.

Wheezing is common among preschool children, representing a group of highly heterogeneous conditions with varying natural history. Several phenotypes wheezing have been proposed to facilitate the identification young children who are at risk subsequent development asthma. Epidemiological and immunological studies across different populations revealed key role environmental factors in influencing progression from childhood Significant include severe respiratory infections, allergic sensitization, exposure tobacco smoke. In contrast, farming/rural environment has linked asthma protection both human animal studies. Early intense exposures microorganisms microbial metabolites demonstrated alter host immune responses allergens viruses, thereby driving trajectory away illness Ongoing clinical trials candidate microbes products shown promise shaping function reduce episodes viral-induced wheezing. Moreover, restoring training may be especially important for had reduced due pandemic restrictions. A comprehensive understanding modifiable will pave way developing targeted prevention strategies

While molecular testing with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) remains the gold-standard test for COVID-19 diagnosis and screening, more rapid or affordable antigen options have been developed. More affordable, point-of-care testing, despite being less sensitive compared to assays, might be preferable wider screening initiatives. Simple laboratory, imaging clinical parameters could facilitate prognostication triage. This comprehensive review summarises current evidence on diagnostic, prognostic tests COVID-19.

Abstract By the April 12, 2022, COVID‐19 pandemic had resulted in over half a billion people being infected worldwide. There have been 6.1 million deaths directly due to infection, but has many more short‐ and long‐term pervasive effects on physical mental health of population. Allergic diseases are among most prevalent noncommunicable chronic pediatric population, health‐care professionals researchers were seeking answers since beginning pandemic. Children at lower risk developing severe or dying from infection. not associated with higher severity mortality, apart severe/poorly controlled asthma. The disrupted routine care, mitigation strategies, including limited telemedicine, successfully implemented continue delivery high‐standard care. Although children faced multitude pandemic‐related issues, allergic conditions effectively treated remotely while reduction air pollution lack contact outdoor allergens improvement, particularly respiratory allergies. is no evidence recommend substantial changes usual management modalities children, allergen immunotherapy use biologicals. greater multisystem inflammatory syndrome development, some associations Long COVID reported, although data limited, further research needed. This statement EAACI Section Pediatrics provides recommendations based lessons learnt pandemic, as available evidence.
