Father–Toddler Bonding during the COVID-19 Lockdown: Qualitative Insights from 17 Families in Britain DOI Creative Commons

The UK lockdowns brought about many domestic changes. One was that families with young children found themselves in the largely unique situation where fathers who normally worked away and saw little of their during day were now at home full-time. This coupled fact grandparents unavailable as lockdown rules prohibited visits travel elderly especially vulnerable. study aimed to explore how this novel family regarded by parents they thought it would affect children’s social development. Thematic analysis interviews 24 mothers toddlers revealed most did not think negatively impacted child’s development, although worried nonetheless. Having overwhelmingly seen a positive for both dad’s attachment toddler toddler’s dad. narrative around more divided; there an almost even split between thinking grandparental absence had negative impact on grandparent–child relationship those made no difference. provides qualitative insight into unusual suggesting felt father-child bonds strengthened lockdown, remains be if relationships are improved long-term.
