Enthusiasm for and investments in nature-based solutions (NBS) as sustainable strategies climate adaptation infrastructure development is building among governments, the scientific community, engineering practitioners. This particularly true water security water-related risks. In a freshwater context, NBS may provide much-needed “win-wins” society environment that could benefit imperiled biodiversity. Such conservation benefits are urgently needed given ongoing biodiversity crisis, with declines species their habitats occurring at more than twice rate of marine or terrestrial systems. However, to make meaningful contributions safeguarding biodiversity, clear links must be established between applications priorities conservation. this paper, we link common six priority actions life by science n highlight research knowledge will necessary bring bear on crisis. particular, illustrate how can play direct role restoring degraded aquatic floodplain ecosystems, enhancing in-stream quality, improving hydrological connectivity ecosystems. System-level monitoring ensure deliver promised ecosystems species.

Abstract Human activities and climate change threaten coldwater organisms in freshwater ecosystems by causing rivers streams to warm, increasing the intensity frequency of warm temperature events, reducing thermal heterogeneity. Cold‐water refuges are discrete patches relatively cool water that used for relief short‐term survival. Globally, cohesive management approaches needed consider interlinked physical, biological, social factors cold‐water refuges. We review current understanding refuges, identify gaps between science management, evaluate policies aimed at protecting thermally sensitive species. Existing include designating habitats, restricting fishing during periods, implementing threshold standards or guidelines. However, these rare uncoordinated across spatial scales often do not input from Indigenous peoples. propose be managed as distinct operational landscape units, which provide a ecological context is relevant watershed scale. These units foundation an integrated framework links (1) mapping characterizing prioritize conservation actions, (2) leveraging existing new policies, (3) improving coordination jurisdictions, (4) adaptive practices scales. Our findings show while there many opportunities scientific advancement, state sciences sufficient inform policy management. proposed provides path forward managing using protect face global change.

Incorporating a citizen science approach into biological invasion management strategies can enhance biosecurity. Many projects exist to strengthen the of forest pest and pathogen invasions within both pre- post-border scenarios. Besides value initiatives for early detection monitoring, they also contribute widely raising awareness, informing decisions about eradication containment efforts minimize spread, even finding resistant plant material restoration landscapes degraded by disease. Overall, many actively engage citizens in different stages invasions, but it is unclear how work together across all entire process Here we provide examples each stage process, discuss options developing program biosecurity, suggest approaches integrating biosecurity measures help safeguard resources future.

Invasive alien species (IAS) adversely impact biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and socio-economics. Citizen science can be an effective tool for IAS surveillance, management, research, providing large datasets over wide spatial extents long time periods, with public participants generating knowledge that supports action. We demonstrate how citizen has contributed across the biological invasion process, especially early detection distribution mapping. However, we recommend could used more assessing impacts evaluating success of management. does have limitations, explore solutions to two key challenges: ensuring data accuracy dealing uneven coverage potential recorders (which limits dataset's "fit purpose"). Greater co-development stakeholders will help us better realize its process ecosystems globally while meeting needs participants, local communities, scientists, decision-makers.

The management of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) is often hindered by ecological, social and economic factors, resulting in inadequate biodiversity protection inefficient use public money. A clear example such aquatic ecosystems the European catfish Silurus glanis L. southern Europe. Native to central Eurasia, S. an emblematic controversial freshwater fish, being subject extensive profitable trophy angling Europe commercial fishing eastern Concurrently, western where it was introduced XIX century, considered a problematic invader. lack comprehensive information on invasive populations has limited effective management, which critical successfully control spread minimize negative impacts native species. LIFE PREDATOR, started September 2022 with budget € 2.85 million consortium six partners from three countries, aims at developing multidisciplinary transnational approach established , prevent further spreading future introductions lakes reservoirs. project will develop test early warning system based eDNA citizen science identify most selective capture techniques reduce abundance catfish, particularly Natura 2000 lakes, actively involving anglers professional fishermen this. Massive raising awareness campaigns be conducted targeting but also general public, protocols best practices transferred authorities. Predicting the distribution of Invasive alien species (IAS) using models is promising for conservation planning. To achieve accurate predictions, it essential to explore niche dynamics. New approaches are necessary bringing this analysis real management needs. Using multi-site comparisons can provide great useful insights better understand invasion processes. Exploring fine-scale overlap between IAS and native sharing a location be key tool achieving implementation local actions, which play fundamental role in global IAS. This also increase society’s awareness threat In context, here, we explored two research demands. First, studied large-scale dynamics invasive Paraserianthes lophantha (Willd.) I.C. Nielsen’s considering different invaded areas. The compared niches range (South Western Australia) with Australian (eastern Australia); European range, its full (native plus range) range. Second, perform at landscape scale Spain. We P. remarkable interest ( Quercus lusitanica Lam). All analyses were realized following well-established ordination (principal component analysis) approach where important methodological aspects analyzed. Our study detected shifts ranges demonstrating that labile may potentially adapt further climate conditions spread Comparative supports calibrate including information predict potential distribution. explained used as model example how these studies promote actions situ complement strategies.

Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring of species distribution has become a critical tool in ecology, conservation biology and fisheries for identifying the presence diverse organisms, including important, threatened invasive species. However, eDNA detection still room improvement sensitivity, requiring time‐consuming real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) steps costly machines. In this study, we report CRISPR‐Cas13‐based method rapid, easy, sensitive, low‐cost on‐site eDNA. The assay common carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) medaka Oryzias latipes nucleic acid employs two‐step process, starting with recombinase amplification (RPA) followed by cleavage using Cas13 nuclease, to effectively identify mitochondrial or RNA. Our results showed that Cas13‐based higher sensitivity than qPCR‐based detecting tiny amounts When combined reverse transcription environmental RNA (eRNA), our increased approximately one order magnitude. could achieve quick extraction solution lateral flow strips. eRNA requires minimal training efforts can be performed 1 h, without need centrifugation qPCR portability method, along its accuracy relative ease designing primers CRISPR (crRNA), underscores potential broaden application various fields, biodiversity conservation.
