Civil infrastructure will be essential to face the interlinked existential threats of climate change and rising resource demands while ensuring a livable Anthropocene for all. However, conventional planning largely neglects contributions maintenance Earth’s ecological life support systems, which provide irreplaceable services supporting human well-being. The stability performance these depend on biodiversity, but practices, narrowly focused controlling natural capital, have inadvertently degraded biodiversity perpetuating social inequities. Here, we envision new paradigm wherein ecosystem are central objective civil engineering. In particular, reimagine practice such that 1) integrity species conservation explicit objectives from outset project planning; 2) practices integrate into diverse portfolios along spectrum nature-based solutions habitats; 3) functions reinforce enhance lifespan assets; 4) engineering promotes environmental justice by counteracting legacies inequity in development nature conservation. This vision calls fundamental rethinking standards, mission agencies broadening scope science. We critically examine legal professional precedents this shift, as well moral economic imperatives manifesting equitable mainstreams nature’s benefits people. Finally, set an applied research agenda highlight financial, professional, policy pathways achieving it.

Abstract The Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) calls for a 50% reduction in rates of invasive alien species establishment by 2030. However, estimating changes introduction and is far from straightforward, particularly on national scale. Variation survey effort over time, the absence data effort, aspects invasion process itself interact ways that make rate estimates naive models trends inaccurate. To support progress toward robust global reporting against GBF invasions target, we illustrate this problem using combination simulations, scale case studies. We provide recommendations clear set steps are needed progress. These include routine collection as part surveillance monitoring protocols working closely with researchers to develop meaningful change biological invasions. Better awareness challenge investment developing approaches will be required Parties if Target 6 tracked achieved.

ABSTRACT Efficient allocation of managers' limited resources is necessary to effectively control invasive species, but determining how allocate effort between monitoring and management over space time remains a challenge. In an adaptive context, data are key for gaining knowledge iteratively improving management, costs money. Community science or other opportunistic present opportunity managers gain critical without substantial reduction in funds. We designed strategy evaluation investigate optimal spatial while also exploring the potential community improve decision‐making, using flowering rush ( Butomus umbellatus ) Columbia River, USA, as case study. evaluated alternatives under two invasion conditions, well‐established emerging invasion, both risk‐neutral risk‐averse decision makers. Simulations revealed that regardless condition risk tolerance, allocating outward from estimated center Epicenter prioritization) resulted lowest overall level infestation at end management. This outperformed which occurred fixed areas Linear targeted patchily distributed with highest species High prioritization). Additionally, outcomes improved when more were allocated toward removal than effort, addition only certain scenarios. Finally, actions led best often did not produce most accurate precise estimates parameters describing system function, emphasizing importance value information principles guide monitoring. Our approach adaptable many contexts ongoing allows strategies be updated time.

The accuracy of predicting the spread biological invasions is improved if models explicitly incorporate two main dispersal mechanisms: diffusive and jump dispersal. However, quantitative methods for differentiating these mechanisms in spatial occurrence data are lacking. We present jumpID, an R package using directional analysis to distinguish between invasions. applied this method from spotted lanternfly ( Lycorma delicatula ) invasion US, a pest rapidly expanding its range impacting forest grape industries. Application jumpID dataset 123,542 records uncovered 152 jumps 2014–2022, with first 2017, three years after lanternfly’s find. More than half started satellite year their detection. average distance did not change over time, 89% shorter 200 km just farther 300 km. overall rate was 41 ± 24 SD km/year, but reduced 25 11 km/year when considering only. Estimating enhances our understanding species’ mechanisms, provides more robust estimates diffusion rates models, helps determine perimeters containment control measures. openly available facilitate invasive analysis. equips scientists managers tool separate species into components, allowing precise parameterization directly informing management strategies. system indicates that efforts targeting should focus on 200-km buffer around boundary which where occur.

Remote sensing is a rapidly advancing technology with wide range of applications in ecosystem management. This chapter presents literature review focusing on ecological remote the context invasions Australian Acacia species ('wattles') at global level. Of ten studied worldwide, only half, namely A. cyclops, dealbata, longifolia, mearnsii and saligna, were more than once. Research hotspots are South Africa Portugal, while large gaps exist elsewhere. Abstract Aquatic invasive species are a serious and growing threat to biodiversity. Zebra quagga mussels ( Dreissena polymorpha D. rostriformis bugensis ) freshwater invaders causing substantial ecological economic damage across Europe North America. Early detection of other non‐indigenous is increasingly needed prevent their establishment spread. Environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques potentially offer higher sensitivity monitoring tools complement more conventional methods for surveying adult juvenile veliger larvae. eDNA assays typically performed on small‐volume (0.5–5 L) water samples that concentrated by filtration prior extraction downstream processing. Sampling using towed plankton net larger (64 μm) pore size can process orders magnitude volumes with the potential increasing sensitivity. We compared sensitivities high‐volume tow sampling filter in three recently infested lakes Canada Minnesota, USA. Paired were analyzed an established quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay genus. Higher yields (more copies) recovered from than filtered all 33 paired comparisons. In some cases, positive while lower‐volume filtering produced false negative detection. Our results demonstrate effectiveness early mussels, method be used exclusively or as supplement sampling. further suggest testing could incorporated into programs routinely use tows visual mollusk larvae, well aquatic non‐invasive ranging metazoans, including many fish.

Abstract The global marine ecosystem is changing rapidly as the result of biogeochemical cycles and structure being altered by industrial civilization. Invasive species (IMS) are one most damaging regional consequences human activity, easily attributable to specific processes. This makes IMS introduction tractable threats for management appropriate policies. Once established, a different set policies required either restrict spread, or attempt local eradication. key tool damage mitigation rapid, widely deployable detection. Environmental Nucleic Acids (eNA), combining environmental DNA (eDNA) RNA (eRNA) analyses, have emerged valuable tools sensitive, cost-effective readily detection IMS. Methods eNA still developed through widespread active research community, so identifying limitations current processes will help prioritise eNA-based research. Effective management of invasive species within protected areas requires innovative solutions. In the Mascarene's archipelago, national park Reunion contains largest area intact vegetation, which faces alarming threats from alien plant species. response, local government initiated an inclusive partnership in 2018 involving decision-makers, managers, and scientists to address An operational framework planning implementation has been established encompassing five key steps: (1) conduct a comprehensive site assessment, (2) model future threats, (3) prioritise interventions, (4) implement actions through multi-stakeholder programme spanning multiple years, (5) evaluate effectiveness implemented interventions. This study provides in-depth examination research-action framework, illustrating outputs for priority sites. Our survey covered over 2500 ha, quantifying invasion degree three vegetation strata at fine-scale, revealed significant subalpine remain remarkably pristine. By adapting participatory conservation approaches, we developed implementation-level scale useful managers guided interventions on ground. The exemplifies transdisciplinary approach with broad array stakeholders.
