Sexual selection is often invoked to explain the evolution of extravagant morphologies, such as antlers and horns. While focus typically on process exaggeration these traits, functional impact remains a topic debate. One aspect that has been largely overlooked how exaggerated structures might thermal biology. For example, hollow (i.e., non-vascularized or non-perfused) structure increases in size, its surface area volume change, potentially impacting ability obtain dissipate heat passively. However, if vascularized, case arthropods, hemolymph perfusion, then it may be actively used radiator avoid overheating instances stress. Based additional examples, we propose morphological influence arthropods manage exchange with environment. Ultimately, individuals bear develop ecological innovations that, due corollary effect, maximize effectiveness thermoregulation. Our essay divided into four sections. First, delve structures, particularly animal weapons, organisms environment, implications for whole-organism Second, use beetles fiddler crabs provide experimental evidence structural Third, examine macroecological data from explore size sexually-selected morphologies varies changes environmental temperature. Finally, synthesize pieces identify significant gaps knowledge. Through this essay, aim ignite discussion driven by sexual can lead not only role but also biology individuals.

Abstract Urbanization is rapidly expanding at the global level, a phenomenon often reported to exert negative effects on biodiversity. However, many important knowledge gaps about effect of urbanization biodiversity remain, posing conservation challenges. This especially true for certain taxonomic groups like arthropods, despite being most diverse and abundant animal group Earth. Here, we conduct an exhaustive systematic literature review meta‐analysis assess whether how negatively associated with arthropod diversity. We explored potential geographic, temporal biases in availability evidence. In addition, make use variance investigate urban areas across world show similar patterns diversity change. Our results support previous studies; are associated. not all seem respond similarly (e.g., Odonata) potentially suggesting importance implementing taxa‐specific actions areas. On other hand, our showed higher compared non‐urban habitats, great implementation city practices or attributes promote communities. Last, identified several key geographic that require additional scientific attention as well strong evidence negative‐effects publication bias literature. highlight ecology research helping design more ecosystems.

Meta-analyses are powerful synthesis tools that popular in ecology and evolution owing to the rapidly growing literature of this field. Although usefulness meta-analyses depends on their reliability, such as precision individual mean effect sizes, attempts reproduce meta-analyses’ results remain rare evolution. Here, we assess reliability 41 sexual signals by evaluating reproducibility replicability results. We attempted to: (i) sizes using datasets they provided; (ii) re-extracting 5703 from 246 primary studies used sources; (iii) extent relevant data missed original meta-analyses; (iv) replicate after incorporating re-extracted missing data. found many discrepancies between reported those generated our analyses for all attempts. Nonetheless, argue evaluated largely reproducible replicable because differences were small magnitude, leaving interpretation these unchanged. Still, highlight issues observed affected providing recommendations ameliorate them.
