Abstract Variance partitioning is a common tool for statistical analysis and interpretation in both observational experimental studies ecology. Its popularity has led to proliferation of methods with sometimes confusing or contradicting interpretations. Here, we present variance model‐based Bayesian framework as general summarizing interpreting regression‐like models produce additional insight on ecological compared what traditional parameter inference these its own can reveal. For example, propose predictive extend sample‐based analyses whole populations scenarios. We also encompass within between ecologically relevant subgroups the observations, population interest, provide information how relative roles processes underlying study system may vary depending environmental context. discuss role correlated covariates random effects highlight uncertainty quantification partitioning. To showcase utility our approach, case comprising simple occupancy model metapopulation Glanville fritillary butterfly. As result, demonstrate rigorous gain more from data.

In the last decade, databases of records species observed at same location different points in time over large spatial extents have been made available. Unfortunately, these sources are scarce regions such as Latin America. We present a dataset 60,179 point occurrences (i.e. presence-only data, PO) and 45,468 camera-trap survey presence-absence PA) for 63 carnivores Neotropical Region from 2000 to 2021. collated data various sources, including 64 newly-digitised bibliographic references. cleaned, taxonomically harmonised standardised following Darwin Core Humboldt standards them here csv files. also fit analyses by aggregating into two periods (time1: 2000–2013 time2: 2014–2021), with PO grid cell counts 100 × km PA polygons varying size, presented geopackage These can be used large-scale distribution models, calculation population trends, extinction risk educational purposes.

Over the last decades, worldwide decline of amphibian populations has become a major concern researchers and conservationists. Studies have reported diversity trends, with some species strongly declining, others remaining stable still increasing. However, only few been monitored annually for long period time by specific monitoring programmes. Instead, there are many heterogeneous datasets that contain observations amphibians from professional surveys as well diverse citizen science other voluntary surveys. The use these data brings number challenges, raising concerns about their validity in ecological research conservation. We assessed to what extent such occurrence can provide information on status trends contrasting different approaches overcoming challenges data, using German state Saxony an example. effects processing decisions infer absences, survey method statistical model (generalised linear mixed-effect [GLMM] versus occupancy-detection model) compared expert opinions (Red Lists). mainly led similar annual occupancy estimates, newts being exception. Annual estimates were typically less certain when attempting account methods, which could be explained missing values methods. Separate models drift fence reduced uncertainty probability GLMM models, but remained high models. For both strong peaks troughs occurred several species, not biologically plausible. Some align periods lower sampling effort probably caused shifts locations or target amongst years. Only three ( Bufotes viridis , Hyla arborea Pelophylax esculentus ) trend results consistent opinions. most inconsistencies appeared approaches, indicating assessments sensitive analytical choices. While proved useful taxa, our highlight complexity them amphibians. recommend better harmonisation collection metadata documentation, including explicit absence and, if available, abundance enable more robust future.

ABSTRACT Online portals have facilitated collecting extensive biodiversity data by naturalists, offering unprecedented coverage and resolution in space time. Despite being the most widely available class of data, opportunistically collected records remained largely inaccessible to community ecologists since imperfect highly heterogeneous detection process can severely bias inference. We present a novel statistical approach that leverages these datasets embedding spatiotemporal joint species distribution model within flexible site‐occupancy framework. Our addresses variable probabilities across visits modelling phenological patterns extending use latent variables characterise observer‐specific reporting behaviour. apply our an dataset on lentic odonates, encompassing over 100,000 waterbody Flanders (N‐Belgium), show provides insights into biological communities at high resolution, including phenology, interannual trends, environmental associations co‐distributional composition.

This study explores the iron content in wild animal meats, a critical component of diets several Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) worldwide. Our research aimed to: (i) characterize muscles viscera mammals birds, (ii) assess whether bird muscle contains less than mammal muscle. Employing systematic literature review guided by PRISMA standards utilizing databases such as Web Science, Medline/PubMed, Scopus, we analyzed data from eight pertinent studies. No regarding were identified. findings indicate significant disparity between mammals, with former exhibiting over six times (mean 15.25 mg per 100g) compared to latter 2.24 100g). Contrary our hypothesis, birds 3.75 did not significantly differ (p=0.120), descriptively, demonstrating nearly 70% higher content. unexpected result may be attributed influence slaughter methods, gunshot, which prevents external bleeding, or behavior. underscores necessity considering techniques nutritional assessments meat. These only contribute understanding values meat but also prompt further investigation into their role human diets, especially among IPLC.
