Abstract. Floods, droughts, and heatwaves are increasing globally. This is typically attributed to CO2-driven climate change. However, at the global scale, change neither reduces precipitation nor adequately explains droughts despite modest increase in evapotranspiration due temperature rise. Past land-use changes, particularly soil sealing, compaction, drainage, likely be more significant for water losses resulting from runoff leading flooding scarcity. The importance of these processes generally poorly addressed modelling because hydrological models rarely reflect lateral fluxes atmosphere, on surface, soil. Land use only considered coarse categories, neighbourhood effects feedback mechanisms neglected. even if fail we cannot create landscape experiments, there sufficient evidence that land a key driver problem solution mitigate floods, heatwaves. Addressing changes imperative as they persist with zero net CO2 emissions, making world vulnerable.
