Conceptions of participation in child protection care assessments—A discourse analysis of independent experts accounts

Abstract Although there is a growing knowledge base on children’s participation in child welfare, little research has examined the child’s position as participant protection assessments undertaken by independent experts. Independent experts are commonly used care proceedings to assess families and contribute sound basis for order decisions. Their reports highly influential welfare decision-making process. Based twelve qualitative interviews with experts, we explore accounts of their practices involving children investigation. Using discursive approach, analyse how use various interpretative repertoires about reason themselves participants assessment. Our analysis demonstrates four distinct positions constructions participation. These protector position, investigator facilitator non-therapist each interpretation repertoire.
