Storks are a conspicuous pan-global freshwater flagship taxon with 20 extant species, all of which have been accorded IUCN Red List status. assessments use combination scientific evidence and expert inputs to develop species-level status, but there is little careful evaluation whether these comparable across species. Small-scale poultry production systems are mostly found in rural, resource-poor areas that often also experience food insecurity. They accessible to vulnerable groups of society, and provide households with income nutritionally-rich sources. However, they improve security indirect ways, such as enhancing nutrient utilisation recycling the environment, contributing mixed farming practices, women's empowerment, enabling access healthcare education. Further, may contribute several Sustainable Development Goals, future through maintaining biodiverse genomes. In extensive small-scale systems, significant impediments achieving these contributions disease predation, which can be reduced improved agricultural livestock extension community animal health networks. For intensive feed price fluctuations inadequate biosecurity major constraints.

Tropical forest diversity is simultaneously threatened by habitat loss and exploitation for wildlife trade. Quantitative conservation assessments have previously considered these threats separately, yet their impacts frequently act together. We integrate extent maps in 2000 2015 with a method of quantifying pressure based upon species' commercial value accessibility. do so 308 forest-dependent bird species, which 77 are commercially traded, the Southeast Asian biodiversity hotspot Sundaland. find 89% (274) species experienced average losses 16% estimate led to mean population declines 37%. Assessing combined deforestation indicates exploited much higher (54%), nearly doubling regionally endemic (from 27 51) extinction that should be IUCN Red Listed. Combined assessment major vital accurately quantify loss.

Abstract Tropical East Asia is home to over 1 billion people and faces massive human impacts from its rising population rapid economic growth. It has already lost more than half of forest cover the highest rates deforestation logging in tropics. Hunting trade wildlife products threaten all large many smaller vertebrates. Despite these problems, region still supports an estimated 15–25 per cent global terrestrial biodiversity thus a key focus for conservation. This book therefore deals with plants, animals, ecosystems they inhabit, as well diverse threats their survival options provides background knowledge region’s ecology needed by both specialists non-specialists put own work into broader context. The first edition was describe entire Asian tropics subtropics, southern China western Indonesia, second extended coverage include very similar Northeast India, Bangladesh, Bhutan. third updates contents gives prominence Anthropocene possible conservation responses. accessible style, comprehensive coverage, engaging illustrations make this advanced textbook essential read senior undergraduate graduate-level students studying tropics, authoritative reference professional ecologists, conservationists, interested amateurs worldwide.

The use of native species in forest restoration has been increasingly recognized as an effective means restoring ecosystem functions and biodiversity to degraded areas across the world. However, successful selection adapted local conditions requires specific knowledge which is often lacking, especially developing countries. In order scale up restoration, experimental data on responses propagation treatments a range are required. this study, potential 34 tree was evaluated based nursery research field planting experiments at highly site subtropical area southwest China. We examined performance terms germination rates well survival growth over 2 years after planting. Of examined, 25 had percentage greater than 50%. Survivorship ranged from 0 97% 50% for 20 species. Mean monthly increments varied between Pioneer performed well, 14 mid- late-successional reasonably very study. remaining 16 poorly. These results indicate that carefully selected can be effectively incorporated into mixed plantings. This used inform planning, helping identify suitable so enhance resilience restored forests.

The behaviours, ecologies and morphologies of pangolins make them challenging to survey monitor, non-targeted wildlife surveys have not produced robust status assessments, especially where population densities are low because overexploitation. To inform the development feasible monitoring techniques for pangolins, we conducted a systematic review all traceable efforts used monitor date: 87 articles were included in review. Pitfalls current approaches discussed recommendations made on suitable methods. Recommendations include use mark-recapture burrow-dwelling species, community interviews, sign-based arid open habitats, detection dog teams, targeted camera-trapping. Occupancy sampling using camera-traps could be some pangolin populations, particularly ground-dwelling but rarity species makes it uncertain whether this would provide enough data monitoring; combinations methods within an occupancy framework likely most effective. There will many circumstances direct at site, level that generate precise data, is financially viable nor best conservation resources. In sites, Asia, too rare as result overexploitation, and/or occur inaccessible areas significant resources needed implement programme. Under such circumstances, proxy variables, including other hunting-sensitive easier record, combination with enforcement or patrol cost-effective method assessing impact interventions status. publication incidental observations ‘by-catch’ significantly improve understanding ecology, therefore how identify, conserve priority populations.
