This review examines observed and hypothesized environmental impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Impacts are considered along two axes: timescale (from initial widespread sheltering, to a future after economic recovery) causal link direct protective measures, cascading policy choices market behavioral responses). The available literature documents both positive negative consequences. These include many early reports (such as clearer skies wildlife returning vacated areas). However, it has become clear that those benefits were largely temporary prolonged health disruptions pose acute risks terrestrial marine ecosystems. Furthermore, this was completed just Omicron variant emerged. Given pandemic's persistence, long timescales impacts, inherent lags in research publication, provides an view what will eventually be known about

Abstract The emergence of infectious diseases, such as COVID‐19, impacts livelihood strategies and conservation tools reliant on human‐wildlife interactions, wildlife‐based tourism research. This is particularly relevant to great ape conservation, humans apes are susceptible being infected by similar pathogens. Evidence‐based required prevent disease transmission people involved in, or living close to, sites. development disease‐safe recommendations their effective operationalisation require an understanding what affects visitor compliance. Based international sample past ( N = 420) potential future visitors 569) wild sites in Africa, we used online questionnaire characterise visitors' practices, assess expectations (e.g. about proximity apes) identify key factors related compliance with mitigation measures. was implemented adapting a framework from health literature (the Health Belief Model; HBM), focused reducing COVID‐19 at early stage the pandemic. Visitors expressed less willingness vaccinated against (which, time our survey conducted, had only just started administered very high‐risk groups), wearing facemask during trekking (although willing when viewing quarantine after travel before visiting apes. Region nationality, experience perceived effectiveness specific measures were important explaining variation across multiple behaviours. By gaining better fosters measures, obtained insights that essential for assessing feasibility, facilitating communication, guiding implementation importance not but also other diseases more broadly, stages pandemics. While requiring adaptive management situations evolve vaccination becoming widely accessible), these will contribute towards sustainable can effectively deliver positive outcomes biodiversity. Abstract The COVID‐19 pandemic has accelerated efforts to engage critically with forest‐adjacent, rural, communities who rely on wildlife. We interviewed 109 hunters of wildlife across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos regarding the effect had them, as well within their communities. found that “negative economic impacts” was a prevalent theme due loss employment, rising prices, restrictions trade resulting from city‐wide lockdowns, factory closures, border closures. In hunting stated have increased young men returned villages; however, in Vietnam Cambodia believed decreased inability middlemen traders travel easily. Our results illustrated general cost, but otherwise no impact Here, we show complex impacts pandemic, contextually specific conservation positives (such trade), negatives supplement employment). illustrate importance establishing sustainable, non‐wildlife‐dependent livelihoods rural communities, mitigate potential for disease transmission, value engaging understand locally spatially trends global challenges.
