Efforts are accelerating to protect and restore ecosystems globally. With trillions of dollars in ecosystem services at stake, no clear framework exists for developing or prioritizing approaches coral reefs even as efforts investment opportunities do so grow worldwide. Coral reefs are facing unprecedented mass bleaching and mortality events due to marine heatwaves climate change. To avoid extirpation, corals must adapt. Individual variation in heat tolerance its heritability underpin the potential for coral adaptation. However, magnitude of variability within populations is largely unresolved. We address this knowledge gap by exposing from a single reef an experimental heatwave. found that double stress dosage was required induce most-tolerant 10%, compared least-tolerant 10% population. By end exposure, all were dead, whereas remained alive. contextualize scale result over coming century, we show under ambitious future emissions scenario, such differences thresholds equate up 17 years delay until onset annual conditions. limited only 10 high scenario. Our results substantial which suggests scope natural or assisted evolution limit impacts change short-term. For persist through adaptation keep pace with ocean warming, reductions be realized.

Abstract Climate‐driven alterations to disturbance regimes are increasingly disrupting patterns of recovery in many biomes. Here, we examine the impact and subsequent level live hard coral cover on Great Barrier Reef (GBR) across last three decades. We demonstrate that a preexisting pattern infrequent disturbances limited spatial extent has changed larger more frequent disturbances, dominated by marine heatwaves severe tropical cyclones. detected an increase (measured as loss) 265 individual impacts 131 reefs 36‐year dataset (1985–2022). Additionally, number survey impacted increased each decade from 6% 1980s 44% 2010s, frequency mass bleaching GBR, which between 19% 28% per year, cyclones (3%–5% year), resulting less time for recovery. Of recorded, complete highest levels recorded earlier this study (the “historical benchmark”) occurred only 62 (23%) times. 23% resulted historical benchmarks, 34/62 recovered their benchmark 2021 or 2022. Complete was likely when <25% cover. The lack attributed windows becoming shorter due increases thermal stress events result episodes. These results confirm climate change is contributing ecosystem‐wide changes ability recover.

Coral populations are being progressively thinned by climate change, which elevates the risk of reproductive failure from Allee effects during fertilization. Studies have shown that fertilization success improves more intense and synchronized spawning, but local dependence on coral density remains unknown in wild populations. Here, we measure individual colonies common table coral, Acropora hyacinthus Palau, Micronesia. We find strong evidence spatial such averaged 30% when were close proximity (<0.5 m), this declined rapidly to less than 10% at a separation 10 m virtually zero 15 20 m. The distance nearest neighbor conspecific, gravid colony is better predictor observing measured several alternative scales (2 m). Spawning synchrony increases corals proximity, may reinforce as become further separated. Fertilization nearly threefold second night spawning with higher wind despite there intensive colonies, highlighting potential importance prevailing weather driving outcome mass events. Overall, population A. achieved 71% its potential. Ecosystem recovery from human-induced disturbances, whether through natural processes or restoration, is occurring worldwide. Yet, dynamics, and their implications for broader ecosystem management, remain unclear. We explored dynamics using coral reefs as a case study. tracked the fate of 809 individual recruits that settled after severe bleaching event at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Recruited Acropora corals, first detected in 2020, grew to cover levels were equivalent global average within just 2 years. Furthermore, we found 11.5 per square meter sufficient reach this However, wave exposure, growth form colony density had marked effect on rates. Our results underscore importance considering management restoration highlight how lessons learnt reef can inform our understanding high-diversity climate-disturbed ecosystems.

Increasing seawater temperatures are expected to have profound consequences for reef-building corals' physiology. Understanding how demography changes in response chronic exposure warming will help forecast coral communities respond climate change. Here, we measure growth rates of fragments four common species, while exposing them ranging from 19°C 31°C one month calibrate their thermal-performance curves (TPCs). Our results show that, there contrasting differences between the shape TPCs was remarkably consistent among individuals same species. The low variation thermal sensitivity within species may imply a reduced capacity rapid adaptive responses future regimes. Additionally, interspecific negative relationship maximum and optima, contradicting expectations derived classic ‘warmer-is-better’ hypothesis. Among trade-off current growth, whereby most perform well under regimes but susceptible increases temperature. Increases water temperature with change likely reduce rates, further hampering reef recovery potentially altering community composition.
