In response to the striking effects of environmental change, conservation strategies often include identification areas that can effectively maintain vulnerable species. Consequently, identifying system‐specific conditions demographic and genetic viability species concern is essential. Connectivity plays a critical role in persistence populations. Islands have been model systems understand connectivity metapopulation processes emerged as particularly favorable targets for conservation. While islands be isolated from mainland disturbances, it unknown what degree isolation necessary avoid unfavorable changes but remain sufficiently connected population viability. To test this question, we explored within Apostle Islands, an archipelago 22 Lake Superior, by comparing historical contemporary trends ice bridge simulating effect reduced system. We developed demographically informed individual‐based explicitly influence diversity American marten Martes americana , forest carnivore at risk across its southern range boundary. found was resilient moderate cover, complete loss resulted rapid erosion. Despite erosion, populations persisted long nominal occurred between islands. Our work suggests will decline, martens would and, short term, act refuge along species' Identifying thresholds allow disturbance identify suitable space time.
