The assessment of impacts alien species is one the most critical steps for prioritisation policy and management actions this requires schemes that can compare across different taxa, ecosystems socio-economic contexts. Environmental Socio-Economic Impact Classification Alien Species (EICAT SEICAT) are two methodologies facilitate such comparisons. They classify taxa along a 5-level, semi-quantitative scale based on magnitude their environment human well-being, respectively. In study, we applied both protocols to seven invasive marine fishes already considered “high-risk” have been singled out monitoring in relation fisheries Mediterranean (Plotosus lineatus, Pterois miles/volitans, Fistularia commersonii, Lagocephalus sceleratus, Siganus rivulatus/Siganus luridus Saurida lessepsianus). Here, focus particular impacts. By systematically reviewing published literature scoring demonstrated show with highest environmental (Major) P. miles/volitans siganids. contrast, L. sceleratus had impact (Moderate) number records. high uniform densities lineatus caused widespread, albeit less severe, invaded areas. Human activities primarily affected by selected commercial recreational fishing other uses sea through on, mainly, material assets health. We found significant data gaps regarding species’ impacts, especially relating predation, make specific recommendations future research. links between cultural dimensions, poorly documented require novel approaches. Surveys specifically adapted capture distinction classes would strengthen our confidence assessments better inform decision-making.

The Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT) can be used to classify alien taxa according the magnitude and type of their environmental impacts. EICAT protocol, classifications using protocol (EICAT classification) data underpinning data) are increasingly by scientists practitioners such as governments, NGOs civil society a variety purposes. However, properties it generates not suitable certain uses. Therefore, we present guidelines designed clarify facilitate appropriate use tackle broad range conservation issues related biological invasions, well guide research communication more generally. Here address common misconceptions give brief overview some key that all users need aware take maximal advantage this resource. Furthermore, examples wide ways in which have been utilised outline errors pitfalls avoid.
