Before age one, infants often fail to recognize words produced by new talkers or in accents. We ask whether infant’s varying experiences, namely exposure multiple languages accented speech, might influence this ability. Monolingually and multilingually-raised English-learning 8-month-olds were habituated a novel word-object link, tested see they would increase their looking time (i.e. dishabituate) when 1) the link was broken hearing word with old object vice versa), 2) talker (Exp accent 2), i.e. changes which maintain link). Monolingually- dishabituated all changes, suggesting that language experiences do not shape learning recognition as here. This work provides further evidence 8-month-olds’ links are non-adult-like from more diverse group of participants.

Both behavioral and neurophysiological evidence shows that lexical-semantic organization emerges by two years in monolingual children. Research bilingual children is more scarce, there only a limited amount of the effect language dominance on activation. In present event-related potential (ERP) study, we investigated whether French-Spanish French-English learning 24- to 30-month-olds activate semantic relations between words similarly their both languages, priming effects are similar different pairs. Participants were presented with related unrelated dominant non-dominant word pairs within-language paradigm. The amplitudes N400 modulated trial type, group. A language-independent - pronounced for than target was found group toddlers French Spanish. English, observed language. Our results propose pair may contribute facilitation tasks during early childhood.

Sometime before their second birthday, many children have a period of rapid expressive vocabulary growth called the spurt. Theories underlying mechanisms differ: accumulator models emphasize accumulation experience with words over time to yield spurt-like pattern, while cognitive attribute spurt changes. To test these theories, English–French monolingual and bilingual different exposure each language were studied. Dense, longitudinal data was analyzed from 45 infants aged 16-30 months, whose measured on total 617 occasions in English and/or French. Single-language (English French), concept (number concepts lexicalized across both languages), word (sum languages) scores computed. Infants’ balance using questionnaire. Logistic curves fitted infant’s estimate timing (midpoint) steepness (slope) single-language, concept, vocabularies. 76% showed at least one type, bilinguals less likely show non-dominant than dominant language. For single-language vocabulary, more had earlier spurts. combined vocabularies (concept word), monolinguals unbalanced steeper spurts balanced bilinguals. Results better support predictions that follow acquisition trajectories based background.
