Lexical-semantic activation in French-Spanish or French-English bilingual toddlers: An event-related potential (ERP) investigation

Both
behavioral
and
neurophysiological
evidence
shows
that
lexical-semantic
organization
emerges
by
two
years
in
monolingual
children.
Research
bilingual
children

more
scarce,
there
only

limited
amount
of
the
effect
language
dominance
on
activation.

present
event-related
potential
(ERP)
study,
we
investigated
whether
French-Spanish
French-English
learning
24-
to
30-month-olds
activate
semantic
relations
between
words
similarly
their
both
languages,
priming
effects
are
similar
different
pairs.
Participants
were
presented
with
related
unrelated
dominant
non-dominant
word
pairs
within-language
paradigm.
The
amplitudes
N400
modulated
trial
type,
group.
A
language-independent
-
pronounced
for
than
target
was
found

Testing Theories of the Vocabulary Spurt with Monolingual and Bilingual Infants

Sometime
before
their
second
birthday,
many
children
have
a
period
of
rapid
expressive
vocabulary
growth
called
the
spurt.
Theories
underlying
mechanisms
differ:
accumulator
models
emphasize
accumulation
experience
with
words
over
time
to
yield
spurt-like
pattern,
while
cognitive
attribute
spurt
changes.
To
test
these
theories,
English–French
monolingual
and
bilingual
different
exposure
each
language
were
studied.
Dense,
longitudinal
data
was
analyzed
from
45
infants
aged
16-30
months,
whose
measured
on
total
617
occasions
in
English
and/or
French.
Single-language
(English
French),
concept
(number
concepts
lexicalized
across
both
languages),
word
(sum
languages)
scores
computed.
Infants’
balance
using
questionnaire.
Logistic
curves
fitted
infant’s
estimate
timing
(midpoint)
steepness
(slope)
single-language,
concept,
vocabularies.
76%
showed
at
least
one
type,
bilinguals
less
likely
show
non-dominant
than
dominant
language.
For
single-language
vocabulary,
more
had
earlier
spurts.
combined
vocabularies
(concept
word),
monolinguals
unbalanced
steeper
spurts
balanced
bilinguals.
Results
better
support
predictions
that
follow
acquisition
trajectories
based
background.

Before
age
one,
infants
often
fail
to
recognize
words
produced
by
new
talkers
or
in
accents.
We
ask
whether
infant’s
varying
experiences,
namely
exposure
multiple
languages
accented
speech,
might
influence
this
ability.
Monolingually
and
multilingually-raised
English-learning
8-month-olds
were
habituated
a
novel
word-object
link,
tested
see
they
would
increase
their
looking
time
(i.e.
dishabituate)
when
1)
the
link
was
broken
hearing
word
with
old
object
vice
versa),
2)
talker
(Exp
accent
2),
i.e.
changes
which
maintain
link).
Monolingually-
dishabituated
all
changes,
suggesting
that
language
experiences
do
not
shape
learning
recognition
as
here.
This
work
provides
further
evidence
8-month-olds’
links
are
non-adult-like
from
more
diverse
group
of
participants.
