Habitat fragmentation is often assumed to negatively impact species diversity because smaller, more isolated populations on smaller habitat patches are at a higher extinction risk. However, some empirical and theoretical studies suggest that landscapes with numerous small may support richness, although the circumstances remain elusive. Moreover, relationship between connectivity pronounced High these preventing local extinctions facilitating recolonization. In contrast, less significant large-patch landscapes, where generalist dominate. findings highlight complex interplay size quality, connectivity, among determining richness. patterns produced represent null predictions useful reference for specialized questions predictions. ABSTRACT The increasing environmental changes threatening the fish fauna of streams are driving a growing interest in understanding how sites and species contribute to diversity, as this is important information for decision‐making related management conservation priority areas species. objective study was understand factors, spatial distance between streams, land use, cover (landscape) may be associated with uniqueness assemblages Amazonian streams. We sampled characterised conditions 29 within around Tapajós River basin, near Amazon National Park Brazil. Each stream studied along 150‐m stretch. variables local contribution beta diversity (LCBD) were vegetation presence refuges. Streams inside outside park showed similar contributions diversity. Species richness abundance negative relationship LCBD, suggesting that unique tended have few low abundance. contributed most (SCBD) had intermediate occurrence, high abundance, non‐marginal niches. did not observe an effect niche breadth on SCBD, both generalist specialist equally Our findings underscore role ecological uniqueness. Sites composition also exhibit demonstrates importance conserving biodiversity face changes. By examining species, we highlight considering habitat quality protecting these ecosystems against challenges global change.

ABSTRACT Biodiversity loss has increased interest in understanding biodiversity patterns and their driving mechanisms global. A growing of empirical evidence suggests that, addition to purely species diversity, studies phylogenetic diversity can provide distinct but complementary information about mechanisms. However, there was still a lack research on integrating analyse the spatial fish diversity. Here, we evaluated response assemblages environmental factors Jiangxi Province. The results showed that 243 were recorded province, including 14 invasive species. There 126 native China 33 endemic Yangtze River Basin. Red List IUCN assessments 31 (12.8%) 16 (6.6%) Threatened or Near (1 Extinct; 6 1 Critically Endangered; 3 Endangered, 8 5 Vulnerable, Threatened), respectively. number carnivorous (111), demersal (143) resident (153) higher than other functional taxa. Fish not significantly differences ( p = 0.521), exhibited 0.001). turnover (0.53) nestedness (0.17), larger protected areas would be necessary conserve regional biodiversity. Environmental geographic generally had no significant effect only nitrate nitrogen correlated with highlight importance evaluating both when identifying useful implications guidance for conservation regions facing human disturbances.

Freshwater environments are intertwined with human activities and the consequence has been environmental degradation biodiversity loss. Fish provide key ecological economic benefits, fish abundance diversity can be affected by resulting in functional (FD) changes that might scale up to ecosystem impacts. Changes FD expressed quantifying its three main components: richness, regularity divergence. There is no consensus about how affect components of FD. In addition, communities differently temperate tropical regions because differences regional species pools distribution traits. Here, using a meta‐analytical approach, we assess different (e.g. deforestation, invasion, reservoirs) freshwater systems communities. We compiled information from 2012 2023, found highly idiosyncratic patterns globally, but consistent loss richness face tropics. This idiosyncrasy could related high heterogeneity or multiple ways which activities, including introduction non‐native species, uniqueness redundancy. The reduction reveals redundancy alone does not prevent declines diversity, removing specific functions natural environments. Despite general observed, local features play crucial role shaping respond activities. Therefore, it essential understand these at investigate mechanisms impact

Abstract The identification of multiple facets biodiversity (e.g., phylogenetic and functional) can help to understand how evolutionary ecological mechanisms shape the assembly biological communities. Here, we employed regressions variance partitions investigate effects environmental conditions, connectivity space on aspects functional fish fauna in tropical headwater streams Xingu River basin, Eastern Amazonia. We found that diversities communities are related local conditions stream drainage network, with marked differences occurring between rainy dry periods. Furthermore, discovered uniqueness was influenced mainly by factors, whereas had a more complex relationship influence factors connectivity. Our findings indicate assemblages small basin share close history. This is probably because climatic stability experienced Amazonian ichthyofauna over time. emphasise role niche‐based processes shaping unique composition streams, highlight importance heterogeneity maintaining integrity these freshwater ecosystems.
