In adult Lepidoptera the labial palps are best known for their role in CO2 detection, but they can also bear sensilla chaetica which function is unknown. The number and distribution of was studied using a bright field microscope. To determine if these have gustatory function, we performed single sensillum electrophysiology recordings from palp antennal moths Cydia pomonella (L.), Grapholita molesta (Busck) Lobesia botrana (Denis Shieffermüller). Each stimulated with 3 doses one four test stimulus (sucrose, fructose, KCl NaCl). Overall, responses (spikes/s-1) increased dose, were higher than antennae, to sugars salts. With response concentration not antenna. salts there drop at intermediate concentration. position on variable among individuals. Sensilla located most exposed areas palp. Differences detected between species. Such differences species antenna suggest that taste an unforeseen adaptation.

Ants have remarkably diverse diets and extraordinary species richness, making them an excellent model system to study the evolution of taste. In this entirely eusocial clade, food choice mechanisms that regulate feeding both individual social dimensions. How taste receptors sensory processing drive preferences generate dietary breadth in ants is poorly understood. Abstract Neonicotinoids represent over a quarter of the global pesticide market. Research on their environmental impact has revealed adverse effect cognitive functions pollinators, in particular bees. Cognitive impairments, mostly by behavioural studies, are phenotypic expression an alteration underlying neural circuits, matter deserving greater attention. Here, we reviewed studies field‐relevant doses neonicotinoids neurophysiology and neurodevelopment In particular, focus olfactory system as much knowledge been gained different brain areas that participate odour processing. Recent have detrimental effects at multiple levels system, including modulation odorant‐induced activity sensory neurons, diminished responses antennal lobe (the first processing centre) abnormal development connectivity within mushroom bodies (central neuropils involved multisensory integration, learning memory storage, among others). Given importance perception for aspects bee biology, reported disruption circuit, which can occur even upon exposure to sublethal neonicotinoids, severe consequences both individual colony levels. Moreover, multimodal structure such indicate neonicotinoids' translates other domains. Assessing pesticides is crucial understanding how influence behaviour ecological contexts defining effective sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract Honey bees exhibit remarkable visual learning capacities, which can be studied using virtual reality (VR) landscapes in laboratory conditions. Existing VR environments for are imperfect as they provide either open-loop conditions or 2D displays. Here we achieved a true 3D environment walking learned to discriminate rewarded from punished stimulus based on color differences. We included ventral frontal background cues, were also subjected updating the bee movements. thus if and how presence of such motion cues affected discrimination our landscape. Our results showed that frontal, lesser extent, impaired bees’ performance. Whenever these suppressed, became possible. analyzed specific contribution foreground discussed role attentional interference differences salience account results. Honey bees are reputed for their remarkable visual learning and navigation capabilities. These capacities can be studied in virtual reality (VR) environments, which allow studying performances of tethered animals stationary flight or walk under full control the sensory environment. Here, we used a 2D VR setup bee walking restrictive closed-loop conditions learned to discriminate vertical rectangles differing color reinforcing outcome. Closed-loop restricted stimulus lateral displacements. Consistently with prior analyses, trained stimuli. Ex vivo analyses on brains learners non-learners showed that successful led downregulation three immediate early genes main regions circuit, optic lobes (OLs) calyces mushroom bodies (MBs). While Egr1 was downregulated OLs, Hr38 kakusei were coincidently MBs. Our work thus reveals discrimination induced neural signature distributed along sequential pathway processing is consistent an inhibitory trace. This trace may relate motor patterns required solve task, different from those underlying pathfinding 3D scenarios allowing exploratory lead IEG upregulation.

The adipokinetic hormone (AKH) of insects is considered an equivalent the mammalian glucagon as it induces fast mobilization carbohydrates and lipids from fat body upon starvation. Yet, in foraging honey bees, which lack storage for carbohydrates, was suggested that AKH may have lost its original function. Here we manipulated energy budget bee foragers to determine effect on appetitive responses. As participates a cascade leading acceptance unpalatable substances starved Drosophila, also assessed presented with sucrose solution spiked salicin. Starved partially-fed bees were topically exposed different doses if this modifies food ingestion responsiveness. We found significant (i.e. vs. partially-fed) decision ingest or respond both pure salicin, but no per se. These results are consistent loss function foragers, accordance social life implies storing resources hive, amounts exceed individual needs.

Invasive plants represent a significant global challenge as they compete with native for limited resources such space, nutrients and pollinators. Here, we focused on four invasive species that are widely spread in the French Pyrenees, Buddleja davidii , Reynoutria japonica Spiraea Impatiens glandulifera analyzed their visual advertisement signals respect to those displayed by surrounding using perceptual approach based neural mechanisms of bee vision given bees regular pollinators these plants. Two morphs I. both highly salient different This distinctive identity facilitates detection learning association rich nectar. Abstract Bees are perhaps the most important model for studying complex cognition in invertebrates, showing a variety of impressive abilities. Many experiments employ training procedure which animal associates characteristic “flower” (neutral stimulus) to sucrose solution (positive over multiple foraging bouts. We hypothesized that might appear different from water bee sensorium, rendering it superfluous learn intended experimental cues. To test this hypothesis, we presented bumblebees simultaneously with 1.6M and on artificial flowers. solutions three conditions, identify likely recognition mechanism: drop form, inside cotton-plugged centrifuge tubes, soaked into raised cigarette filters. The chose contact significantly more often all confirming their ability discriminate at distance, spectral differences being mechanism differentiation. These results have large implications design procedures, as presence an alternative cue may mask learning challenging tasks. This force us re-examine much literature unpublished ‘negative results’ cognition: weakening some claims, but strengthening others.
