Recent studies suggest that attention is rhythmic. Whether rhythmicity can be explained by the phase of ongoing neural oscillations, however, still debated. Unilateral left hand contractions (LHCs) have been used as a neurophysiologically motivated intervention for optimizing and stabilizing wide range of behaviors, including motor performance. What is currently unknown however the efficacy neurophysiological basis LHC interventions. The aim this systematic meta-analysis was to review synthesize evidence on effectiveness LHCs, pre-performance routine, We, therefore, discuss theoretical background, highlights key methodological considerations, suggest areas future research. An electronic search PubMed, PsycInfo, Google Scholar, Scopus, SPORTDiscus databases conducted identify peer-reviewed literature relating LHCs performance, skilled peak choking. Ten studies (12 effect sizes) met inclusion criteria were retained quality assessment synthesis. findings indicate moderate interventions performance (g = 0.59, 95% CI 0.14, 1.03); further, moderator analyses revealed that significant in experimental design studies, among sub-elite elite athletes, when participants exposed high-pressure situations. A trim-and-fill analysis estimate correct any potential publication bias, results may not be robust initially appeared. We conclude should interpreted with caution. Specifically, concerns regarding study lack specificity appear limit impact significance it stands.

Abstract Domain-general cognitive systems are essential for adaptive human behaviour, supporting various tasks through flexible neural mechanisms. While fMRI studies link frontoparietal network activation to increasing demands across tasks, the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying this domain-general response demand remain unclear. Here, we used MEG/EEG, and separated aperiodic oscillatory components of signals examine their roles in cognition three using multivariate analysis. We found that both (broadband power, slope, intercept) (theta, alpha, beta power) coded task content all subtasks. Aperiodic broadband power particular strongly demand, a manner generalised Source estimation suggested decreased brain, with strongest modulations overlapping network. In contrast, activity showed more localised patterns modulation, primarily frontal or occipital regions. These results provide insights into underpinnings cognition, highlighting critical role power.

Abstract EEG phase is increasingly used in cognitive neuroscience, brain–computer interfaces, and closed-loop stimulation devices. However, it unknown how accurate prediction across states. We determined the accuracy of parieto-occipital alpha waves rest task states 484 participants over 11 public datasets. were able to track accurately various conditions datasets, especially during periods high instantaneous power signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Although resting generally have higher accuracies than states, absolute differences small, with most these attributable SNR. These results suggest that experiments technologies using should focus more on minimizing external noise waiting for rather inducing a particular state.

Temporal regularities are ubiquitous in our environment. The theory of entrainment posits that the brain can utilize these by synchronizing neural activity with external events, thereby, aligning moments high excitability expected upcoming stimuli and facilitating perception. Despite numerous accounts reporting behavioural electrophysiological measures, evidence regarding this phenomenon remains mixed, several recent studies having failed to provide confirmatory evidence. Notably, it is currently unclear whether for how long effects persist beyond their initiating stimulus, they remain restricted stimulated sensory modality or cross over other modalities. Here, we set out answer questions presenting participants either visual auditory rhythmic stimulation, followed a target at six possible time points, in-phase out-of-phase relative initial stimulus train. Unexpectedly, but line studies, observed no cyclic fluctuations performance, despite design being highly similar those used previous demonstrations entrainment. However, data revealed temporally less specific attentional effect, via cross-modally facilitated performance following compared stimulation. In addition potentially higher salience rhythms, could indicate an effect on oscillatory 3-Hz amplitude, resulting cognitive control attention. summary, study further challenges generality periodic modulation associated entrainment, while demonstrating modality-independent attention
