There is a worldwide need to enhance soil health, particularly in agricultural areas. Groundcovers are widely recognized sustainable land management (SLM) practices that improve health and provide climate benefits by sequestering atmospheric carbon. A paired-plots study was carried out woody crops (17 sites, olive groves vineyards) semiarid area of central Spain measure parameter changes induced different the medium term. The selection across locations aimed determine whether impact groundcovers substantial enough produce significant studied parameters, even when accounting for variations types. Each site consisted neighboring plots: One managed with conventional tillage (CT). other an alternative practice: (1) spontaneous (GC) or (2) no (NM). Vegetation parameters were measured spring 2021. Despite low aboveground biomass GC (77 g m−2), this treatment improved organic carbon stock (+4.4 Mg ha−1), infiltration rate (+50%), aggregate stability (+35%) compared CT, but higher compaction along profile detected. NM only resulted better rate, high compaction. Our provides supplementary information long-term studies, which may include biological as indicators yield response. Outcomes these assessments lend support implementation policies promote SLM practice, order extend technique crops.

Grape pomace (GP), a by-product of winemaking, is rich in organic carbon and nutrients, offering potential as an alternative to synthetic soil amendments. However, its broader use agriculture remains limited due uncertainties about long-term environmental agronomic impacts. This review assesses the GP amendment, highlighting ability enhance matter, nutrient availability, physicochemical properties. At same time, concerns remain regarding acidic nature, wide carbon-to‑nitrogen (C/N) ratio, bioactive compounds, such mycotoxins (poly)phenols, which could negatively impact microbial communities cycling. Furthermore, residual contaminants pesticides heavy metals may pose ecotoxicological risks, potentially disrupting ecosystem functions contaminating surrounding environments. Besides these challenges, research on efficiency, fate mobility soil, particularly relation type, climate, agricultural practices, limited. effects various (pre)treatments (e.g., composting, fermentation) properties interactions require more systematic investigation. Future should focus field trials, advanced analytical methods, effective monitoring frameworks. It essential refine regulatory guidance based comprehensive risk assessments ensure safe application maximize GP's benefits. Overcoming challenges transform into valuable resource for sustainable agriculture, contributing health, climate resilience, circular economy.
