Urban noise and artificial light at night (ALAN) are global pollutants affecting animal acoustic communication. A previous study that measured noise, but not ALAN, found vermilion flycatchers produce longer songs in noisier territories. subsequent another population, males emit brighter, noisier, The negative result could be due a lack of sufficient variation the latter study. We evaluated contribution ALAN on song length, provided ALAN. also peak frequency. During dawn chorus, we recorded 41 two populations (UNAM PERM), temperature. For population with (UNAM), confirmed length was positively associated noise; it negatively especially those late breeding season. At UNAM, an overall positive association between pitch ALAN; additionally, singing relatively low ambient temperatures (12-15 °C) produced higher pitched as increased. Those closer to new moon levels (43-54 dB[A]) sang brighter territories; these results should taken cautiously. Our show light, date, temperature unexpected ways pitch, potentially information content sexual selection.

Abstract Sexual signals are archetypes of contingent evolution: hyper-diverse across species, often evolving fast and in unpredictable directions. It is unclear to which extent their evolutionary unpredictability weakens deterministic evolution, or takes place bounded by patterns trait evolution. We compared the evolution sound frequency sexual (advertisement songs) non-sexual social (calls) > 500 genera crown songbird families. Contrary acoustic adaptation hypothesis, we found no evidence that forest species used lower frequencies songs calls. Consistent with song, phylogenetic signal for than calls, suggests faster less predictable direction lineages longer songs, presumably experience stronger selection on song. Abstract The avian bill is finely adjusted to foraging ecology and, as part of the vocal tract, it may also affect sexual signals such songs. Acoustic theory predicts that larger bills lower resonant frequency tracts, allowing larger-billed species emphasize sound frequencies. Theory identical changes in gape allow singing over a wider bandwidth species. We tested these associations between size and frequencies song, controlling for body mass, across ca. 1000 taxonomically-diverse passerines. Phylogenetically informed analyses indicated both sizes are negatively related songs, with additive effects similar strength. Analyses reduced datasets, decrease bill-body associations, effect remains thus not an artefact its covariation size. Sound was only but size, perhaps because large greater modulation hinder fast movement. Since has major role explaining differences birdsong frequency, can be magic trait promotes reproductive isolation consequence ecological divergence.

Birdsongs are among the most distinctive animal signals. Their evolution is thought to be shaped simultaneously by habitat structure and constraints of morphology. Habitat affects song transmission detectability, thus influencing (the acoustic adaptation hypothesis), while body size beak shape necessarily constrain characteristics morphological constraint hypothesis). Yet, support for hypotheses remains equivocal, their simultaneous examination infrequent. Using a phenotypically diverse Australasian bird clade, honeyeaters (Aves: Meliphagidae), we compile dataset consisting song, environmental, variables 163 species jointly examine predictions these two hypotheses. Overall, find that constrains frequency pace in honeyeaters. Although type environmental temperature influence aspects indirect, likely via effects variation on size, with some evidence elevation peak frequency. Our results demonstrate morphology has an overwhelming birdsong, hypothesis, environment playing secondary role generally rather than structure. These suggest changing (a consequence both global such as climate change local transformation) will substantially nature birdsong.

Animal communication plays a crucial role in biology, yet the wide variability vocalizations is not fully understood. Previous studies birds have been limited taxonomic and analytical breadth. Here, we analyse an extensive dataset of >140 000 recordings from 8450 bird species, representing nearly every avian order family, under structural causal model framework, to explore influence eco-evolutionary traits on acoustic frequency characteristics. We find that body mass, beak size, habitat associations geography characteristics, with varying degrees interaction song acquisition type. no evidence for vegetation density, sexual dimorphism, range size competition our measures Our results, built decades researchers’ empirical observations collected across globe, provide new breadth about how processes shape communication.

Birdsong is a complex signal shaped by multiple factors and has been explored most widely through the lens of sexual selection, but with mixed results. Here, we focus on evolution two song parameters: diversity, which studied, composition, poorly understood. We assessed potential role mating system as proxy for in addition, investigated whether colony size, sociality, phylogenetic history influence these parameters weaverbirds family (Aves: Ploceidae). Using comparative path analyses find that, expected, species living larger colonies present greater diversity had similar composition. However, contrary to expectations, polygamous do not higher nor more acoustic composition than monogamous species. A relatively high effect phylogeny was detected both variables. Our results thus suggest this family, sociality stronger driver selection. These findings highlight importance testing when studying bird relevance sociality.

Physiological constraints related to atmospheric temperature pose a limit body and appendage size in endothermic animals. This relationship has been summarised by two classical principles of biogeography: Bergmann's Allen's rules. Body may also constrain other phenotypic traits important ecology, evolution behaviour, such effects have seldom investigated at continental scale. Through multilevel-modelling approach, we demonstrate that continent-wide morphology African barbets follows predictions rule, mirrors variation song pitch, an acoustic trait species recognition sexual selection. Specifically, on frequency accordance with rule dwarf those adaptation Our findings suggest macroecological patterns can influence ecology evolution, provide baseline for further studies the environmental change bird song.

Bird sounds have obvious characteristics per species, and they are an important way for birds to communicate transmit information. However, the recorded bird in field usually mixed, which making it challenging identify different species perform associated tasks. In this study, based on supervised learning framework, we propose a sound separation network, dual-path tiny transformer directly end-to-end mixed time-domain. This network is mainly composed of simplified structure, greatly reduces computational resources required network. Experimental results show that our proposed has good performance (SI-SNRi reaches 19.3 dB SDRi 20.1 dB), but compared with DPRNN DPTNet, its parameters floating point operations reduced, means higher efficiency faster speed. The high indicate valuable distinguishing individual studying interaction between birds, as well realizing automatic identification variety mobile devices or edge computing devices.
