Abstract Temperature and biodiversity changes occur in concert, but their joint effects on ecological stability of natural food webs are unknown. Here, we assess these relationships 19 planktonic webs. We estimate as structural (using the volume contraction rate) temporal variation species abundances). Warmer temperatures were associated with lower stability, while had no consistent either property. While richness was higher Simpson diversity stability. The responses linked to disproportionate contributions from two trophic groups (predators consumers), both synchrony all within web distinctive three (predators, consumers, producers). Our results suggest that, ecosystems, warmer can erode ecosystem may not have effects.

The Yangtze River has experienced severe ecological degradation due to intensive human activities, including dam construction, land reclamation, and overfishing. These disturbances have disrupted the natural habitats of River, leading a sharp decline in fish biodiversity fishery resources. To address this crisis, Chinese government implemented 10-year fishing ban January 2021 mitigate pressures on populations, restore aquatic habitats, promote recovery. middle reaches are characterized by diverse species critical habitat for life, study seeks assess effects diversity, body structure, population community dynamics region. Fish monitoring data collected from 2017–2019 (pre-ban) 2021–2023 (post-ban) were analyzed evaluate changes size, structure. analysis results using PSD method indicate that size increased following ban, suggesting improvement structures, change complexity food web Species diversity indices showed partial recovery, but recovery was uneven across different sampling sites. While populations signs improvement, particularly terms stability, remained at relatively low levels some areas, indicating full resource may require extended conservation efforts. findings suggest while had positive initial impact conditions, continued long-term measures essential fully recovering river’s restoring its also highlights importance as part ongoing efforts effectiveness refine management strategies River.

Abstract Biotic interactions are widely recognised as the backbone of ecological communities, but how best to study them is a subject intense debate, especially at macro‐ecological scales. Understanding how environmental and human pressures impact the temporal stability of fish community biomass on shallow reefs is essential for effective conservation management. These influence directly, by affecting species’ asynchrony in fluctuations. However, their effects may also indirectly depend functional traits species composing community, which remains poorly understood. Here, we examine both direct indirect, trait-mediated variability impacts 215 Australian reefs. communities span a 10-degree sea surface temperature (SST) gradient have been monitored over 14 years. Our results indicate higher tropical owing to trait diversity redundancy colder, temperate mean trophic level. Human impacts, through negative diversity, were main destabilizing factor biomass. Temporal change SST destabilized while increasing level communities. Overall, our findings show that comprehensive analysis multiple facets crucial better understand forecast long-term marine ecosystems under global change.

Abstract Food webs represent trophic interactions within ecosystems. Matching traits of consumers and resources helps infer food-web properties. Environmental (e)DNA, commonly used for detecting species occurrences, is rarely in trait-matching studies because abundance estimates descriptions relevant are generally missing. We synthesized recent literature on inferences with eDNA trait matching to identify challenges opportunities coupled eDNA–trait recording schemes. Our case study shows how coupling data collection improves the ability characterize greater numbers food across multiple scales ranging from spatiotemporal variation. The relationship between diversity and stability is a focus in community ecology, but the relevant hypotheses have not been rigorously tested at trophic network levels due to lack of long-term data species interactions. Here, by using seed tagging infrared camera tracking methods, we qualified seed-rodent interactions, analyzed associations rodent with diversity, abundance, complexity 15 patches subtropical forest from 2013 2021. A total 47,400 seeds were released, 1,467 rodents marked, 110 networks reconstructed estimate richness, metrics. We found, younger older stands, richness abundance (biomass) increased, while those decreased, leading higher nestedness, linkage density, generality connectance stands. With increase temperature precipitation, (biomass), growth rate increased significantly. found (i.e., inverse variability) was significantly positively associated availability, density networks, providing evidence supporting Bottom-Up Diversity-Stability Hypotheses Abundant Food Hypothesis. A tenet of ecology is that temporal variability in ecological structure and processes tends to decrease with increasing spatial scales (from locales regions) levels biological organization populations communities). However, patterns across trophic the mechanisms produce them remain poorly understood. Specifically, used a hierarchical partitioning method disentangle propagation levels. We then structural equation modeling determine if strength direction relationships between variability, synchrony, biodiversity, environmental settings depended on level scale. found decreased producers tertiary consumers but did so mainly at local Species population synchrony within increased level, whereas among decreased.
