ABSTRACT Social insects, i.e. ants, bees, wasps and termites, are key components of ecological communities, important ecosystem services (ESs) providers. Here, we review the literature in order to ( i ) analyse particular traits social insects that make them good suppliers ESs; ii compile assess management strategies improve provided by insects; iii detect gaps our knowledge about provide. provide at least 10 however, many poorly understood or valued. Relevant include high biomass numerical abundance, a diversity mutualistic associations, ability build biogenic structures, versatile production chemical defences, simultaneous delivery several ESs, presence castes division labour, efficient communication cooperation, capacity store food, long lifespan. All these characteristics enhance as ES providers, highlighting their potential, constancy efficiency services. In turn, stress tolerant easy manage, so increasing ESs they We emphasise need for conservation approach services, well potential use help restore habitats degraded human activities. addition, evaluate both disservices an integrated way, because some species among most problematic invasive native pests. Citizen science (CS) contributes to the knowledge about species distributions, which is a critical foundation in studies of invasive species, biological conservation, and response climatic change. In this study, we assessed value CS for termites worldwide. First, compared abundance diversity geo-tagged termite records iNaturalist that University Florida collection (UFTC) Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Second, quantified how combination these data sources affected number genera satisfy requirements ecological niche modeling. Third, taxonomic correctness Americas at genus family level through expert review based on photo identification. Results showed were less abundant than those UFTC GBIF, although they complemented latter two selected world regions. A GBIF led significant increase satisfying criterion modeling either alone, whereas adding observations as third source only had moderate effect criterion. Although research grade require community-supported agreed upon identification (ID) below rank, our results indicated do not exhibit higher classification accuracy when are designated grade. This means non-research can be used more completely map presence locations certain geographic without significantly jeopardizing quality. We concluded observation can, some extent, complement collections terms coverage diversity. Based recent contribution patterns data, role contributions expected grow near future.

Abstract Termites are eusocial arthropod decomposers, and improve soil fertility, crop yield, also used by humans for their benefits across the world. However, some species of termites becoming a threat to farming community as they directly indirectly causing major losses agricultural system. It is estimated that cost global economy more than 40 billion USD annually, considerable research has been done on management. In this review, we present available information related sustainable integrated termite management practices (ITM). Furthermore, insist better menace can be possible through: (i) improving traditional methods keep away from crops; (ii) maintain plants with vigor less susceptible attack; (iii) integration techniques reduce infestation in crops surroundings. The application an effective combination recently developed approaches best option growers. Moreover, keeping mind beneficial nature pest, innovative efforts its management, particularly using rapidly emerging technology (e.g., RNA interference), needed.

Significance Gene duplication is a major source of evolutionary innovation and associated with the increases in biological complexity adaptive radiation. Termites are model social organisms characterized by sophisticated caste system. We analyzed genome Japanese subterranean termite, an ecologically economically important insect acting as destructive pest. The analyses revealed significance gene evolution. caste-biased expression was prevalent termite genome. Many duplicated genes were related to functions, such chemical communication, immunity, defense, they often expressed caste-specific organs. propose that facilitates evolution through regulatory diversification leading functional specialization.

Entomology is key to understanding terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems at a time of unprecedented anthropogenic environmental change offers substantial untapped potential benefit humanity in variety ways, from improving agricultural practices managing vector-borne diseases inspiring technological advances. We identified high priority challenges for entomology using an inclusive, open, democratic four-stage prioritisation approach, conducted among the membership affiliates (hereafter 'members') UK-based Royal Entomological Society (RES).A list 710 was gathered 189 RES members. Thematic analysis used group suggestions, followed by online vote determine initial priorities, which were subsequently ranked during workshop involving 37 participants. The outcome set 61 within four groupings related themes: (i) 'Fundamental Research' (themes: Taxonomy, 'Blue Skies' [defined as research ideas without immediate practical application], Methods Techniques); (ii) 'Anthropogenic Impacts Conservation' Anthropogenic Impacts, Conservation Options); (iii) 'Uses, Ecosystem Services Disservices' Benefits, Technology Resources [use insects resource, or inspiration], Pests); (iv) 'Collaboration, Engagement Training' Knowledge Access, Training Collaboration, Societal Engagement).Priority encompass questions, funding objectives, new technologies, priorities outreach engagement. Examples include training taxonomists, establishing global network insect monitoring sites, extent declines, exploring roles cultivated food supply chains, connecting professional with amateur entomologists. Responses different could be led entomologists, all career stages.Overall, provide diverse array options inspire initiate entomological activities reveal contribute addressing human health well-being, change.
