Abstract The status signalling hypothesis aims to explain conspecific variation in ornamentation by suggesting that some ornaments signal dominance status. Here, we use multilevel meta-analytic models challenge the textbook example of this hypothesis, black bib house sparrows ( Passer domesticus ). We conducted a systematic review, and obtained raw data from published unpublished studies test whether rank is positively associated with size across studies. Contrary previous studies, our meta-analysis did not support prediction. Furthermore, found several biases literature further question available for hypothesis. First, overall effect was zero, compared medium detected Second, sizes decreased over time, recently effects were, on average, no longer distinguishable zero. discuss explanations including pleiotropic, population- context-dependent effects. Our findings call reconsidering established evolutionary behavioural ecology, raise important concerns about validity current scientific publishing culture, should stimulate renewed interest understanding within-species ornamental traits.

The genus Gambusia represents approximately 45 species of polyandrous livebearing fishes with reversed sexual size dimorphism (i.e. males smaller than females) and copulation predominantly via male coercion. Male body has been suggested as an important sexually selected trait, but despite abundant research, evidence for selection on in this is mixed. Studies have found that large advantage both male-male competition female choice, small perform sneaky copulations better at higher frequency thus may sire more offspring coercive mating system. Here, we synthesized inconsistent using pre-registered methods hypotheses. We performed a systematic review meta-analysis summary primary (raw) data combining published (n = 19 studies, k 106 effect sizes) unpublished sizes 17, 242) to test whether there overall across studies Gambusia. also tested several specific hypotheses understand the sources heterogeneity effects. Meta-analysis revealed positive correlation between reproductive performance (r 0.23, 95% confidence interval: 0.10-0.35, n 36, 348, 4,514 males, three species). Despite high heterogeneity, large-male appeared robust all measures studied success, paternity, sperm quantity quality), was considerably larger choice 0.43, 0.28-0.59, 14, 43). Meta-regressions factors explaining effects, including type characteristic, male-to-female ratio, status environmental conditions. publication bias; however, its influence our estimates attenuated by substantial amount highlighting importance open accurate meta-analytic estimates. Species identification is an essential ability in every conservation initiative. An efficient and robust computer vision method was attested with available online tool Google's Teachable Machine. This pilot study on developing a species recognition app to create evaluate the usability accuracy of using Machine for at Teluk Air Tawar, Kuala Muda (TAT-KM), Malaysia. The created models evaluated compared training images based web-mining (Google Images Repository) actual photos taken same site. Model A Image) had average 55.30%, while B (actual photos) 99.42%. Regarding success rate over 77%, 27 out 49 test (55.10%) were reported A, 100% rate. approach can replace traditional methods bird handle large amounts data.

Success in sperm competition is an important determinant of male fitness mating systems with female multiple mating. Thus, risk represents a key dimension the social environment to which individual males are expected adaptively adjust their reproductive phenotype. Such adaptive phenotypic adjustment we here refer as niche conformance. In this pre-registered study, investigated how zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, behavior risk. We experimentally manipulated opportunity for extra-pair create two levels risk: 1) Single-pair, no risk; 2) Double-pair, compared courtship, mate guarding, copulation rates, and aggression between treatment groups. To identify hormonal correlates behavioral adjustment, measured plasma testosterone corticosterone before after started. Contrary our predictions, from Double-pair group decreased courtship rates those Single-pair group, responded less aggressively towards intruders than males. Testosterone over breeding cycle, but had effect on either or levels. Our results indicate that finches do not intensify competitive behaviors, upregulate hormones when another pair present. Although found evidence predicted responses risk, show plastically environment.

Abstract Researchers are intrinsically part of the research process. While we may strive for objectivity, there always judgement calls required during research. When you ask ten researchers to answer same question with dataset, will likely receive different answers. This variation in answers has been linked several disciplines’ replication crises. Here, explore whether from movement ecology, specifically habitat selection, vary as a result differing analytical choices. We conducted multiverse analysis on around 400 synthetic animal datasets, exploring multitude pathways determine resulting approximately half million unique estimates selection. By using simulated virtual animals known preference, were able show which decisions could lead more variable The revealed that data quantity (i.e., tracking frequency and duration) was important obtaining consistent than any choice. Overall, pattern shows majority provide similar final results, particularly modern methods. reflects findings other disciplines, indicating while ecology is not immune issues non-replicability stemming researcher choice, it also at greater risk disciplines.
