Abstract Reproductive isolation (RI) is a core concept in evolutionary biology. It has been the central focus of speciation research since modern synthesis and basis by which biological species are defined. Delimiting and naming biodiversity is a vital step toward wildlife conservation research. However, species delimitation must be consistent across biota so that the limited resources available for nature protection can spent effectively objectively. To date, newly discovered lineages typically are either left undescribed thus remain unprotected or being erroneously proposed as new despite mixed evidence completed speciation, in turn contributing to emerging problem of taxonomic inflation. Inspired by recent conceptual methodological progress, we propose standardized workflow combines phylogenetic hybrid zone analyses genomic datasets (“genomic taxonomy”), which phylogeographic do not freely admix ranked species, while those have remained fully genetically compatible subspecies. In both cases, encourage their formal naming, diagnosis, description promote social awareness biodiversity. Abstract An accurate species‐level taxonomy is paramount for biogeographical research, and conversely, data are of importance species delimitation. We here review recent developments future perspectives direct relevance biogeographers. The understanding that independently evolving segments population‐level lineages, the rise integrative approaches to delimit such advent high‐throughput sequencing have considerably renewed discipline taxonomy. Using genome‐scale molecular datasets, extent admixture across hybrid zones can now be effectively assessed evolutionary independence lineages inferred, leading more reliable comparable delimitation criteria. Speciation is driven by the evolution of reproductive isolating barriers that reduce, and ultimately prevent, substantial gene flow between lineages. Despite its central role in evolutionary biology, process can be difficult to study because it proceeds differently among groups may occur over long timescales. Due this complexity, we typically rely on generalizations empirical data describe understand process. Previous reviews isolation (RI) flowering plants have suggested prezygotic or extrinsic generally a stronger effect reducing compared postzygotic intrinsic barriers. Past conclusions rested relatively few estimates RI; however, RI become increasingly abundant past 15 years. We analyzed from recent studies quantifying multiple pre- postmating strengths across 89 taxa pairs using standardized metrics. Individual were average than individual barriers, total strength was approximately twice RI. Diversity, distribution and molecular species delimitation in frogs and toads from the Eastern Palaearctic DOI

Abstract Biodiversity analyses can greatly benefit from coherent species delimitation schemes and up-to-date distribution data. In this article, we have made the daring attempt to delimit map described undescribed lineages of anuran amphibians in Eastern Palaearctic (EP) region its broad sense. Through a literature review, evaluated status considering reproductive isolation genetic divergence, combined with an extensive occurrence dataset (nearly 85k localities). Altogether 274 native 46 genera ten families were retrieved, plus eight additional introduced other realms. Independent hotspots richness concentrated southern Tibet (Medog County), circum-Sichuan Basin region, Taiwan, Korean Peninsula main Japanese islands. Phylogeographic breaks responsible for recent situ speciation events shared around Sichuan Mountains, across Honshu between Ryukyu Island groups, but not shallow water bodies like Yellow Sea Taiwan Strait. Abstract Understanding the phenotypic and genetic architecture of reproductive isolation is a long‐standing goal speciation research. In several systems, large‐effect loci contributing to barrier phenotypes have been characterized, but such causal connections are rarely known for more complex architectures. this study, we combine “top‐down” “bottom‐up” approaches with demographic modelling toward an integrated understanding across monkeyflower hybrid zone. Previous work suggests that pollinator visitation acts as primary gene flow between two divergent red‐ yellow‐flowered ecotypes Mimulus aurantiacus . Several candidate isolating traits anonymous single nucleotide polymorphism under selection identified, their genomic positions remain unknown. Here, report findings from analyses indicate zone formed by secondary contact, subsequent was restricted widespread genome. Using novel, geographic cline‐based genome scan, demonstrate broadly distributed genome, rather than mapping one or few “islands speciation.” Quantitative trait locus (QTL) reveals most floral highly polygenic, little evidence QTL colocalize, indicating genetically independent. Finally, find overlap, suggesting some contribute other forms isolation. Our highlight challenges reveal barriers may play important role in system.

Speciation is a key evolutionary process that not yet fully understood. Combining population genomic and ecological data from multiple diverging pairs of marine snails (Littorina) supports the search for speciation mechanisms. Placing on one-dimensional continuum, undifferentiated populations to species, obscured complexity speciation. Adding axes helped describe either routes or reproductive isolation in snails. Divergent selection repeatedly generated barriers between ecotypes, but appeared less important completing while genetic incompatibilities played role. Chromosomal inversions contributed barriers, with variable impact. A multidimensional (hypercube) approach supported framing questions identification knowledge gaps can be useful understand many other systems.
